    Hi all,
Sorry for the double post, I posted under media and got 0 response.
Anyone having any RW problems with the Cendyne/Pioneer DVR-105?
Bad Imation DVD-RW media or bad format??

I will start this by stating I have been in the +R/RW camp for a long while, as in HP 200i x2 units. I have had no problems, other than the ones caused by myself including using +/RW media that has to be in the hundreds of times each now.
Along about Christmas Office Max was almost giving away the Cendyne silver boxed -R/RW, so I had to try it. Which turns out to be a Pioneer DVR-105. I am having very good success and find it also a very stable unit with the media slightly less expensive [ I use Ritek-R for final burns ].
My question is, I also purchases a 5 pack of Imation DVD-RW and they must be just plain bad media [ I use the Imation +R/RW without problems]. I got 1 or maybe 2 burns and erase out of each, now all show errors when I attempt to reuse, all 5 of them?? [I have tried both full and quick with various software]. I just wanted to know is anyone else had this problem and is it just this media or is this what I can expect for all DVD-R/W format media with these units? If the media is just bad has anyone tried to return product to manufacture for replacement, if so any luck??

  3. I have the same burner. I haven't tried the Imations though. I have used Memorex dvd-rw with success. But I haven't had any luck with Princo 1x whereas others have had success with these discs. My next order is for Riteks.

I've run Pioneer and TDK DVD-RW through a Pioneer A-04 without problems, so it's not that DVD-RW is a bad format. (Regardless of what some of our more... overzealous ... friends in the +R(W) camp might claim.) While I haven't pushed them to as many rewrite cycles as PhilipL apparently has, they've not given me a problem so far...

It may be, as PhilipL suggests, that these Imations are not capable of 2X rewrite speeds... the drive ought to be smart enough to recognize this and downshift to 1X on its own, but you might try manually selecting the 1X speed when you try to erase or burn the disc and see what happens...

  6. I've had consistant problems with Imation -R (not -RW) on the 105 (but work great on 104). Perhaps that is related.

  7. I too have probs with -rw media on pioneer104.

sometimes the media won't re-write. I had one the other day which failed to write. Using Datasafe media mostly but also with whitelabel.

It seem silly to have a bunch of -rw coasters.

I've used Imation-R a number of times, and have had no troubles.

Which firmware version? For all we know it could be the batch of media or the SW, but it is totally reproducable on my 2 systems. Imation in 104, never a problem, in 105, always bad.

Identical Machines (except that one has 512MB other has 640MB RAM), Identical authoring SW. Only difference is 104 on XP machine (latest patches applied to everything) and the 105 on Win2000 (latest patches applied to everything)

Since other people have had problems there must be something common amongst them???

Original firmware version, or at least the one that came with installation cd. But mine is a Pioneer A05 on a generic WindowsME pc with no patches; perhaps there lies the difference?

The Pioneer A05 and the Cendyne 105 are identical hardware except for the SW bundled so that makes no difference.

But if you have firmware 1.00 and are using unpatched WinME, that might be enough difference compared to a 1.21 firmware and W2K. The burning SW (I was using Dazzle* DVD Complete to author DVDs) is probably the 3rd difference.

  12. I'm using the firmware downloaded from Pioneers site last october. Not sure which version, but I think it's the latest.
