  1. I recently bought what was supposed to have been at Liteon LTD166 off of Ebay. When I received the drive and opened the box, it is a LTD163. I was very specific when making payment in stating that I wanted a LTD166 as was advertised in the auction.

So, my question is, are the ripping speeds much different between an LTD163 and a LTD166? If they're about the same, I'm not going to raise too much of a fuss with the seller. If it isn't, then I want to get the correct drive that I paid for.

Thanks for any info you guys can give me on this.

I have the LTD163 and am able to get average rip speeds of about 6x and a maximum speed of 9-10x

I don't know how fast the 166 is, but I believe these speeds are quite competitive with other drives out there.

    Hope this helped

  3. I've never used the LTD166, but I have the 163 and it is excellent in all respects (except the lack of a true region free hack). I have had ripping speeds peak at just over 15x on occassions.

The above speed is for dual-layer discs, for single layer I get an average of about 12x!

  6. I have the LTD 163D, and if ANYONE can honestly tell me that they have a DVD ROM that rips faster on average, i'd have a hard time believing it. I rip at an average of about 12x, and USUALLY between 15.2-15.4x. I got this drive at BEST BUY where they had some mistake with two rebates, and when It was all said and done, I got it brand new for $10. I'd have to say this has been my "BEST BUY" to date. :biglaugha: Bottom line, don't sweat going through all that hoopla with the seller when that DVD ROM is one of the, if not THE best on the market. Hopefully you won't have any issues with the drive itself, using EBAY is 'buyer beware' to say the least. If you purchased from a reputable buyer, then you will be rippin' away with little problem.

  7. Thanks guys. Guess I'll bust this one out of the box then. BTW, if anyone else is looking, I got mine from VM Incorporated. $30.28 shipped to my door. You guys can email Mike from VMI at vmincorporated@hotmail.com

  8. I don't think there was any performance improvement from 163 to 165 to 166, just better (meaning "cheaper & more efficient") manufacturing. Sometimes this actually makes a drive LESS "quality" - lighter, etc. I like my 166, but the 165 & 163 rock, too.

  9. If you all would not mind, can you tell me what DVD media the 163 and 166 will read? Odds are it can read DVD-R/RW but can it also do DVD+R/RW? The one boxed unit only states DVD-R. But the side pannels are usualy bad on info.

Need to retire a set of Creative 2x DVD drives since they wont read any DVD +- whatever media.

    Tnks

  10. I have an LTD166 and it certainly is a fast drive. It is not as good as my DVRA05 DVD burner at reading scratched disks, but will read moderately scratched disks no problems.

I can confirm that the LTD166 reads DVD-R and DVD-RW very well. In fact I use my LTD166 and Nero DVD speed to verify my burnt disks.

  11. Tnks!

Looking at these two drive and also a OEM Sony reader that may do both plus & minus but is locked at 2x for ripping. Its a toss on price since they are less than 5 dollas in price.

  15. Yes, it reads the + media as well. I just tested it with a video DVD+RW that I recorded, it plays just fine in the LTD-166S.

  17. I bought 3 types, the samsung 16x, but max rip speed was 2x so i returned and got a liteon 165h but rip speed once again was 2x, then i got a 166s and I still can't rip past 2x..
I have a p4 computer with 512mb of ddr. I tried both using windows explorer and dvd dycrypter 3.14 to copy a NON copyrighted dvd-r disc to hard drive at ti takes me over 45 minutes to dump 4 gigs to hdd.

some ppl claim to be able to do it in less than 5min, i've never seen my liteon pass 4x rip speed.

I applied the latest firmware and still can't.
    can ne1 help me?
    I've tried 3 16x dvdrom drives and still can't pass 2x.

Well, we can pretty much eliminate the player itself, as many others have it and say it rips much faster then 2x. I had a similar problem with my 163D after about a week it started ripping at only 1-2x. A few others posters also had this problem with a Liteon DVD ROM and we reinstalled our operating systems. Incidentally, they were all Windows XP.

Once we did that, our ripping speeds SOARED back to Jet speed. As I mentioned before, since i reinstalled my OS, I have not had a single issue with ripping. Not only have I not had an issue, but I usually average around 10x-12x per MOVIE, dual layered, or otherwise. And many times I get up to 15.2-15.4x. I've ripped MANY entire movies in about 4 minutes. I would try reinstalling your OS since those other methods don't work. If you have XP, then you can multiply my suggestion tenfold. Let us know how it works out.
