What's the point of ripping dvd's when you can buy them for under 20 bucks. I know it's cool but seems to be a waste of time.

two words folks :
Children and Cats
while I don't have experience with the first sort, I do have experience with the 2nd ... cats who insist that DVD cases are playthings, manage to bat them around enough to pop them open and *scraaaaaatch* there goes my favorite Mel Gibson flick...
and that is why I back up DVDs
:P
-
Man, you could make money with the tricks your cats can do, opening cabinets and dvd cases. You should feed them or something.
I would kill any cat that scratched any marathon effort by myself to copy err....backup a movie on to vcd.
Do you guys backup anything and everything. I find 99% of movies so disgustingly bad ( big surprise from an industry that thinks 'real life' TV is entertaining ) that I feel inclined to scratch them myself, nevermind the cats doing it.
Now that I know how to make a vcd copy that looks acceptable, I doubt I can be bothered much to do anymore. It's easier and cheaper to hire them.... and quicker
It's amazing the things you do because you can. I have to laugh at myself for making audio cds of crap artists like Robbie Williams just because the mp3s were there and I could. Needless to say I stopped doing that when I realised I was making cds of music I couldn't be bothered listening to.
-
Ayup pyst..I wish I could make money off their antics... it's what I get for not having closed cabinets in my entertainment center
I personally didn't think DVD cases would pop open as easy as they do being pushed off the the top rack onto a hardwood floor...
was I wrong :P
and pyst, I'm right up there with ya babe on doing things just because you can...while I can't claim the extent of Robbie Williams, I can claim tape-> DVD conversion of campy "USA up All Night" type 70s films.... why do it you ask? BECAUSE YOU CAN!!!

Exciting?
Why would ripping dvd's be regarding as exciting?
It's a pain, new release dvd's in the UK cost anything from £13 ($19-ish) to £20 ($30-ish) so you can see the important of preserving your original investment.
Football (soccer to you perhaps?) is exciting, my 1971 MG B Roadster is exciting, my career is exciting.
DVD ripping is not exciting.

what on earth are you talking about? nobody here is copying movies that they haven't bought yet. just ask "defense"
@ VideoPoo, do you work for the MPAA? You can't be that dumb. That question is almost as ignorant as most of Tik-Tak Know NuTing's comments. I've got a real difficult answer to your question. Now stay with me. How about 80 cents, vs. $20? That only saves about $19.20 per movie. I know those are difficult calculations, and I needed to look at a few calculus books before I posted that intense formula. Now this formula is even more difficult. Take that formula and multiply it by 10 movies, or how about 100 movies? Yea, you're right, it is a waste of time....lol...unreal. Of course, as I've said before, these ONLY apply to movies we already own.

you know what defense, i think we got off on the wrong foot. judging from your hostility, I would say you and i probrably share some similar opinions with regard to DVD authoring as well as high school chumps who mouthed off.
this all started with me getting fed up with all these overzealous exciteable people who go out of their way to "comically" overstate that they aren't copying rentals, (i.e. - "when I copy, I mean, backuphehe") instead of just keeping those unnecessary and usually unwanted tidbits of their own personal behaviour to themselves.
so in response to this, i wrote what I wrote. sorry if it bugged you or anyone else here, i was just messin' around.

@ Zik Zak, that's cool man, steppin' up to the plate to squash this silliness. There's really no place for it on this forum because it's just a waste of time for everyone. As far as getting off on the wrong foot goes, I would have to agree. I did get pissed when I read your post that was openly talking about piracy, but only because I know that this site is the ABSOLUTE best in terms of DVD info. And it is probably safe to say this site is the best in terms of ALL info on ALL formats, SVCD, VCD INCLUDED. I don't know all of the B.S that goes on with checking out certain sites, but I'm pretty sure if too much talk about Piracy goes unpunished, then there would probably be a good chance to get this site shut down. If it weren't for this site, then I can say one thing for sure....I wouldn't know shit about what I was doing. It's one thing to get the necessary tools, but it's another to know how to use them the way they need to be used to get your result. You know what i'm sayin'? That's why I'll try to help any newbie or anyone for that matter. When I read your post, I got pissed, but then I read your response and I just dropped it. But then I must of read five or six posts since then, where you continued to mention my handle and laugh about the piracy issue.
On another note though, I do feel what you're sayin' regarding the people that feel the need to continue to mention the word "back-ups" every other line. I think I've just figured that those people are very paranoid and by saying that, it psychologically makes them feel better. But with the being said, all I was saying is that some things are much better left "unsaid" ya know? It's like all the people that continue to feel the need to say that they have "SCENARIST" because they know it's expensive. But what trips me out is those jokers barely know how get far enough to open the program, let alone actually use it. They just feel the need to mention that they "have" it. Well guess what, I have that shit too, but I don't need to say that. Actually, I've been saving up for seven years to buy it and I just got enough money last week. I still don't know how to use it, but what a GREAT investment it was anyway.Zik-Zak, hopefully we can assist each other with problems regarding the ripping/stripping/of DVD's in the future.

Here is a very powerful reason to backup

UK prices have long since been regarded as the highest in Europe, most certainly more expensive than the US.
An average dvd represents just less that 1% of my take-home salary, but that is irelevant. The factor is the initial outlay and whether you would be prepared to spend it all again.
Of course, if you're earning $100k a year of course you won't spend time backing-up, but when you amass a collection of dvd's as some of the forum users do it makes perfect sense to backup your investment.
I idn't backup too many due to the encoding time but since dvd2one arrived I do all I can (in the time my baby son allows me of course!)

Wow, that article was great. I rented a DVD the other day and playback failed. When I inspected the disc it looked like someone spilled coffee on them. I was like, WTF! Now I know it was delamination. Good reason to make backups of my originals. By chance does anyone know what the average lifespan of DVDR media is? I know some CDR's were rated for 100+ yrs. Just curious.

Hey....
US have good salaries and high quality living. That's why you bomb once in a while a country, just to move your economy.
There are some Western European countries, with good salaries also. But, that is not the rule! Greece, Southern Italy, Portugal, Spain does not follow this rule. Eastern European countries like Poland and Rumania from the other hand, and Russia from the other hand, are much more lower in salaries.
You want a DVD pick for Greek DVD prices for example? Go to http://www.e-shop.gr/Index800.html?PHPSESSID=1
It is the Cheapest DVD store in Greece!
Now, keep in mind that the mainstream Greek salary is 800 euros per month. That means that you are 50 years old. If you are 29 (like me), you have to consider lucky yourself IF you have a salary about 600 euros per month.
Many "smaller" European countries of EE, are like small Argentinas those days, for the "euro" adaption reason. Imagine: In my country a cheese pie last year costed about 30 eurocents. Now it costs 1.20 Euro. But the salaries remained the same....
So, stop be so American (or British) for a while and read beyond CNN reports and Fox News Live and friends articles.
The situation now for most E.E. countries, is like being in a candystore, working in a candystore and you can affort to eat a candy yourself.
You know what the stupid thing is? You can buy a DVD Standalone nowdays here for 90 euros! Yep, it is like buying 3 movies! Stupid, isn't it?

Why do you have to bad mouth the US?

P.S. Sorry but I love my country(and I know yall feel the same way)

Interesting talk about salaries. I work for the BBC and my average wage is £850 a month which is about $1400. This is less than half of what a cameraman or sound supervisor would earn. The cheapest DVD players here are about £80 ($130) and petrol is 78p ($1.28) a litre. As you can see, there is a dramatic difference between economies around the globe.
As for the war, I just think it's a pity that the US is going to war purely for revenge for the attacks on the WTC on the 11-9-01. We all know that Saddam is a vicious evil bastard that the world would be better without, but the same could be said of a lot of other world leaders. This in itself doesn't justify an unprovoked invasion.
Right, here endith the sermon!
