I have been helping to test this app for the past bit and I just have to say that IT ROCKS!!

Kai has requested that I list the disks that I have had problems with (most of my disks ripped perfectly, with absolutely no synch problems). If anyone is able to rip any of these let me know:

Insomnia (original Norwegian flick - criterion) - freezes at yuvscaler when converting to svcd, exits unexpectedly when converting to divx

Sanjuro (japanese - criterion) - same problem as Insomnia

Angels and Insects - same problem as Sanjuro and Insomnia, but this is not a subtitled flick.

Gummo - test video appears very blocky and unwatchable

I have sucessfully performed tests on Rollerball (original), The Big Lebowski, Session 9, Bubble Boy and Ben Hur.

Keep up the good work guys, as said before, this is definitely the answer to our dvd > svcd/vcd/divx synch problems. [/b]

I have to agree. Lot of work went into this, many thanks to K & B for taking the time to develop this. Let's support them so that this app can continue to evolve.

Kai has requested that I list the disks that I have had problems with (most of my disks ripped perfectly, with absolutely no synch problems).
The only one that I have had problems with is Frequency (DVD->SVCD). The problem was not a sync problem, I just could not get the full movie to encode (could be a disk problem, but it looks perfect). Someone else should try this disk.

For the record, I have not had a single sync problem with any DVD that I have tried.

  4. I've got a bit of a problem with the installation and use.

I copied the folder called "forty-two" over to the /Library/Application Support" folder and I went to the links you set out and download the following.

mencoderrc45.sit - Which contained a file called "Mencoder for OS X.app"
lastbinary.sit - which I took the file called mplayer from
and mpeg2enc.txt - which I remaimed "mpeg2enc" without the extension.

I then copied those files into the "/Library/Application Support/forty-two" folder and opened up the "forty-two.app" file.

I went through the setup, selected SVCD output, dragged my DVD over, and clicked "start" ... It told me "mencoder missing"

So I fished around with the file "Mencoder for OS X.app" and got a file inside it called "mencoder" which I'm asuming is the binaries needed. I copied that over to the forty-two folder, and clicked start again, filled in the directory, filename, and it opened up terminal.

But then it just gives me a message "Bus Error"

Suppose you could lend some assistance?

Yes, this is a shortcoming of the documentation on my part. You in fact need to extract mencoder from the .app wrapper's Contents/Resources folder. We are still evaluating the impact of using newer versions of mencoder. This is the one I recommend and use normally.

I have no idea *why* you are getting this error; I do know what is causing it however. One of the testers had this issue, got a new build, and it went away. I believe it has to do with the interaction between the term app and 42.

Try running 42 with the terminal application running, then closed, to see it it makes a difference.

  6. Well crap....

I tried with terminal open and started encoding, and I tried with it closed... No luck what so ever...

    Any other suggestions?

Since many OSX users are using Fink to install command line tools, please include something in the docs about it. For example, I have Fink mplayer installed...

i mplayer 0.90rc2-1 MPEG 1/2, .ogm and AVI movie player

..the links say "this version only" so folks will need to know what is the best way to either run two versions or replace the Fink version.

That's exactly why forty-two's stuff goes into an App Support folder, so it doesn't clash with whatcha may or may not have

You're good. There isn't a bunch of stuff spewing out on the term, because believe it or not, it adds to the encode time.

forty-two is designed to really be set and forget Your cpu speed determines the wait time

Sorry, wrong thread but I was wondering if this is common. When attempting to play the test AVI with Quicktime player I get.. "Couldn't open the file test.avi because there is an error in the program". Divx Doctor II also pukes if I attempt to "fix" it. The repair tool that bindles with the divx.com codec creates a fixed version without an error, but Quicktime still refuses to play it with the same error resulting. Of course mplayer plays the file just fine (fixed or not). I have both the 3ivx and divx.com codecs installed and maybe this is part of the problem. Ultimately this exercise is a waste if I can't ever get Quicktime to play them.

    Yeah...

Check this out: If you want to play your divx movies on a Mac in QuickTime, you cannot use the nDVD setting. These High Quality Audio/Video DivX AVI files use the AC3 audio direct from your DVD, like their PC counterparts.

As there is no AC3 QuickTime codec as of yet, these files will not play in QuickTime, not will the DivX doctors or validators accept them; they are geared towards MP3 VBR Audio.

You can play them in vlc or mplayer. Otherwise, use the mDVD setting. These use mp3 vbr audio and will play just fine in QuickTime.

OOps, I forgot to mention I was using the low bit rate setting (mp3) when I got these errors. I already knew the problem with AC3. The file refuses to open at all by the way. It's not just that there is no audio. I have the QT6 mpeg2 decoder installed along with the 3ivx and divx.com codecs.

God I hate AppleScriptStudio (I call it ASS...that's why B- did a large chunk of that code while I got up to speed)

try to do a chmod 775 /tmp or run Apple's Repair Permissions.
Sounds like a perms problem on the system tmp dir

For that matter Safari may have deleted /tmp altogether

    p.s I'm at 425MB now

p.s.s. I just wanted to add my voice to those who have expressed their gratitude for 42. It's an excellent tool to build on. As someone with limited experience with this junk, it's nice not to be presented with so many ways to shoot myself in the foot while encoding. It would be cool to eventually have options to better monitor, and possibly tweek the process, but a turn-key solution is very nice. It's much better to start with a process that works and tweek things that break it than the other way around.

the mDVD files can be played in QuickTime after you run them thru the DivX 5 Validator.

However, they require the 3ivx codec. (Don't Ask. Blame qshartle) I can change the codec used so that they work with the codec from DivX if folks prefer this.

I ran the test AVI through the validator with no improvement, and I have the 3ivx codec installed. Just to clarify, the validator you speak of comes with the divx.com installer, but the codec needed is the 3ivx one?

Thats correct. The primary DivX testers felt the overall quality was better with (sigh) MSMPEGv4, which is supported by the 3ivx codec.

I used the DivX Validator thingee to to make a test(converted).avi which played just fine in QuickTime 6.01

I'm not using QT 6.1, altho I can't see why it would be an issue.

    Couple of things...

first... data point - locating the 3ivx component in ~/Library/Quicktime seems to work for encode, but not for decode. When I moved it to /Library/Quicktime it started working on files that have been "validated" for playback in QT6.1.

second... My first low bitrate test AVI displays darker than expected. It's not terrible, but dark enough that I would "adjust" it if I had the option. I am ripping Star Wars episode 2 if your interested, and I'm now at about 535MB

  23. first off, thanks so much for this....where can i send donation? i think it is the least i can do....

i installed everything as directed and things seem to be going fine, currently doing Armageddon.....

there seemed to be a little hiccup when trying to use mplayer to give the 60 sec preview....it worked the first time, but now i get this:

It starts to encode, but as far as the preview and mplayer, did i screw up? all 3 required apps are in /Library/Application Support/forty-two

again, thanks so much, and let me know where i can send a donation....

Give that lo' bit a workout...Since I have...a different playback mechanism, I really don't bother with those.

The DivX 5 codec allows you to tweak all that for playback. I may just switch forty-two (back) to using the OpenDivX encoders

The deal is that when it previews the first time the name is movie.avi, but then the preview gets moved to your home folder and renamed. All you need to do is use the right file name for consequent attempts at playback.

Are you serious? Wow. THANK you. You have no idea how much that means to e, or how much I could really use it. Really. PM me. I plan to put something in the docs to this end, but all I have is paypal, and no resources to set up anything else.

this is a bug that showed up once or twice during testing, but we couldn't track it down. If it happens again, pm me as much info about your environment as you feel comfortable with. I'm dedicating to squashing dumb bugs like this one.

What I like about QT is the command-2 double size playback hotkey.

There seems to be some animosity herabouts surrounding the 3ivx codec. Is there something particular that folks hate about it? I guess it supposedly grabs ahold of all DiVX functions unless you uninstall it (whatever that means).

Really? I wasn't aware of that. I know I like the "actual" divx codec better since I know how it works, and I know how to change the way it operates.

I don't know about the 3ivx one tho.
