  1. kai-

i sent you a pm about donation.....hopefully more people will follow....in the pc world, there is an app called DvDxCopy or something like that....you have to have a dvd burner and i doubt it works or has the options, or has the support that people are going to get with forty-two. That app runs about $99....so hopefully people can understand what a great thing you guys did for all of us and help out.....at the very least to keep this app evolving and updated.....

    thanks again......

  3. Kai,

I have a little more info on the Frequency problem encountered during beta testing:

The original problem was that after playing the test clip during DVD->SVCD process, then hitting the 'go on' button to do the whole movie, the term would output the 'cop a walk' message, then immediately after that would output the 'we're done with your DVD' message and eject the disk. Obviously the disk wasn't ripped in those 5 seconds, but looks like the app thinks it was. After the disk is ejected, the app continues to try to process the non-existant .avi and errors out. I should note that the test clip plays back perfectly, with audio.

I tried a DVD->DivX with the same disk last night. The test clip went fine, and after hitting 'go on', the entire disk was successfully converted to DivX. So the original problem of prematurely ejecting the disk only seems to happen for SVCD (and probably VCD) processes, but not for DivX.

During the DivX process, I did get an error at the very end in the term, but the movie was already done so it didn't seem to affect anything:

    Code:
    ...
    STATUS: Ok...Encoding DVD to DivX...ZZZZzz
    ## Component Manager: attempting to find symbols in a component alias of type
    (regR/carP/x!bt)

I noticed MacDSL's question about the terminal hanging after the yuvscaler. I have had this problem on a few of disks (Angels and Insects, Sanjuro and Insomnia - finnish version). I have left it over night, but there is no output, it just hangs. I find that if a disk is going to work it puts in the svcd image warning and then processes. Anyone have any idea why a movie might hang at the yuvscaler?

looks like you might have a space in a filename. I'm going back over the code this afternoon and triple-checking all of the escaping for this.

Regarding the 'mplaer.conf' not found, movie not found, etc:

I had this problem. It was due to one of the following:

Already having a version of mplayer GUI installed
working on a partition other than the startup disk
IE or OS X adding .txt to the end of the mpeg2enc binary after download. Select the file, get info, and view and delete that extension. The extension was hidden by default, and the binary was actually named mpeg2enc.txt, which meant that it never encoded the video, hence the movie not found error.

Kai, I'm trying to sort out your previous posts. Will this downsample a >4.3 DVD? If so, what parts of the DVD (main title, menus) does it retain in the copy? Your posts are a little unclear.

    Thanks. Superb work. I'll donate!

this reply isnt aimed directly at any question, its just a general comment based on the fact that i've dropped of the face of the earth for a few days.. sorry my internet/cable went out on saturday and STILL is not fixed, so i am making this statement while on a school computer, HOPEFULLY internet will be up and running again when i get home. So any applescript based errors that are known will be dealt with today (if all goes well)

  9. Again:

forty-two is a transcoding solution. It does not clone dvds, retaining the structure, etc.

This is not possible, due to the fact that we currently have no tools to change the pointers in .IFO files to flect the offsets of chapters and stuff in the new mpegs/vobs that are generated.

In fact, doing a chapter rip and reencode, while possible, is very, very tedious and time and space consuming...but doable.

*Even then* you still don't get functional menus, tho

As it stands now, 42 transcodes a full movie from DVD to a target format.
Both 4:3 and 16:9/anamorphic 16:9 are supported, as long as the dvd has an ac3 audio track in the language you want.

If you are transcoding from DVD->DVD compatable Mpeg2/AC3, it will retain the aspect, etc of the original source. It letterboxes for SVCD and VCD.

You can imbed subtitles into the videostream as well.

I have now tried 42 on two G4 1G DUAL mirrors running 10.2.3 and I keep getting the same thing. yuvscaler (as noted in previous post) and nothing else. I let the computer(s) sit overnight. One was just a complete reinstall of 10.2.3 and the developer tools, nothing else (and your program and parts) The other machine has numerous, numerous apps on it.

Do I need something like FFmpeg/Afropic/or the binaries from something else isntalled? I cant seem to get the -help or man pages for yuvscaler to work in Terminal, so i guess it's not installed. If I do need yuvscaler installed, is there a specific version I should get and where?

Since i have a DVD burner all I will be doing is DVD-r backups.
I put some money in my Paypal account to transfer if this gets working.

I appreciate all the work, and will contribute if this works...

your problem MIGHT be with spaces in the output file name, spaces just aren't generally accepted in unix and cause lots of problems, when choosing the output name of the file limit to one word.

a lot of ppl are downloading mpeg2enc improperly, if you dont install mpeg2enc and run forty-two it will detect that mpeg2enc is not installed and prompt you to install it, if you choose for it to install it will download the binary in the exact location required. If people are saving the binary output into a text file from whatever browser that could corrupt the binary. if you append .txt to the end then remove it, if it works, im VERY surprised.

yuvscaler is embedded inside forty-two itself. so it ISN'T installed in the sense that it is in your /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin folder or even ~/bin for that matter.

when encoding to DVD or VCD you will JUST get yuvscaler and a blank line while encoding.

a POSSIBLE problem i could see (not definitely) is choosing the same folder for output and temp files. thats the only idea i could have. have you looked in your output or temp folder for any files being encoded?

if its cacking out at yuvscaler, its because it can't run the mpeg2 encoder.

I'll send your the way i do it. Maybe our pal major will let us peek at his installer

weird doesn't make sense that the embedded installer doesn't work, i've tested it out on two seperate computers with no problems, i GUESS it could be a problem if the folder needed doesn't exist. i guess ill look at the code when i get home (crossin fingers that internet is fixed)

I did testing here is what i found..
I reinstalled mpeg2enc as instructed. Repaired permissions on the drive, restarted computer and tried again; same result. The temp files are showing i do get the .avi, .idx, .sub files. i tried using different drives and folders, same result. i would watch a terminal running top command and the test analysis would run fine, but at the end where i hand the mpeg2enc and yuvscaler would just stop, no activity, and would not quit unless i restarted the machine...

So, i got ffmpegx 0.0.6 and at the engines installer installed the 3 files necessary from the existing /library/application support/forty two folder. I did not download them.

Tried 42 again, and now it works...

well, almost.. at the test i get video, but just static for audio, so i think it's fixed, but just a setting change now...

  20. The preview period...

When that pop up showes up, and the test clip has been created, where do I find the test clip?

It doesn't seem to be in the temp folder or the final folder....

Say I named my file "movie" when it asked me for a movie name, what file is it that I'm supposed to check out?

And which program should I use to check it out?

  21. Maybe this is the problem that's why I can't view the preview file...

    Code:
Reading config file /usr/local/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf: No such file or directory
    Reading config file /Users/omega/.mplayer/config
Reading /Users/omega/.mplayer/codecs.conf: can't open '/Users/omega/.mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory
Reading /usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf: can't open '/usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory

Can't open input config file /usr/local/etc/mplayer/input.conf : No such file or directory
Falling back on default (hardcoded) input config

    Playing RandJ.mpg
    File not found: 'RandJ.mpg'
What is that supposed to mean? And how do I "fix it"?

    Thanks...

I believe it will then be called testmovie.mpg (if DVD/SVCD/VCD, otherwise might be *.avi), and it should be located in your home directory.

I think you can view it in MPlayer (gui or otherwise), VLC, and probably QT.

  23. Well, after a long wait, and a 1Gb file that I cannot read with any program, I am lost. Here's the final terminal output I got:

You DID it!!! You got results! You have an in-sync divx avi

    What format did you choose?

If you chose nDVD, you can view this in vlc or mplayer; it has ac3 audio, which won't work in QuickTime.

If you chose mDVD, you need to use DivX Validator (NOT DIVX DOCTOR) so that quicktime can play the audio properly.

Also, you need to have the 3ivx codec installed. This will change in the next release, i'm going back to mpeg4 to avoid this confusion.

    Let me know,

mpeg2enc seems to not be installed properly.

if there is an mpeg2enc in your app support forty-two folder, erase it.

open a term, paste this in, all one line:

    cd /Library/Application\ Support/forty-two && curl http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/mpeg2enc -O

    then re-run forty-two

  27. Hey K-

Yes, I DID it I simply added .avi to the file, and it worked! Still, the final terminal output was not reassuring - it looks like an error. The audio did not work in the QT Player, so i ran it throught the DivX validator, and QT opened it, but froze every time I tried to scrub ahead to a later part of the movie (beachball). MPlayer worked fine, and the quality/sync was perfect. This weekend (once I get finished the work week) I will donate.

May I make some suggestions (That I hope my donation will help fund...):

    1) Simplify the install somehow - can you use a pkg installer? Will that place the forty-two folder in app support?? (just trying to see how mac like this can be - can my mom install and use this app? not yet.)

    2) Simplify support app installations -- you listed a command line to download and install the mpeg2enc file - can you have 42 (the first time you launch it) ask if you want it to fetch these files from the net and install them in the correct places for you? This will save a bit of confusion as to where to get the files, extracting the correct resources, placing them in the right support folder, etc.

    3) 42 must refuse to let you name your output with a SPACE in it.

    4) A web page for the app with online faqs, documentatin, LINK to paypal, LINK to mail questions/comments/suggestions.

Other questions, I was watching TOP during the encode, and though mencode does grab about 60% of my proc, it does not grab all available proc - there's about 15-20% IDLE - can you max out the proc?

I'm sure I will have other ?'s suggestions, I will try to keep giving constructive feedback, but you have already taken the mac to a new place. Previously I felt the process was so tedious that it wasn't worth the effort - now we have true mac ease of use - already way past the rest.

THANK YOU THANK YOU, and congrats on a terrific effort.

    I remember smyrna... *sigh*

on the disk image for forty-two, there is a folder called forty-two. the font folder you need is in there.

copy that whole folder to /Library/Application\ Support/forty-two

that final error is being addressed now, actually...its a stupid typo, easily fixed.

the ff-rw problem has been addressed as well

Drag and drop is even better, which is what we are aiming for

mecoder is a moving target, and has code that is...questionable. We are putting in code to make fetching these things as easy as possible, however.

    3) 42 must refuse to let you name your output with a SPACE in it.
Actually forty-two shouldn't care either way. Spaces are allowed in output paths already; if its a problem in filename then its a bug that we need to fix.

This is already on the list.

    4) A web page for the app with online faqs, documentatin, LINK to paypal, LINK to mail questions/comments/suggestions.
way ahead of you...already being whipped into shape In fact, the faq is being created based on questions here

Other questions, I was watching TOP during the encode, and though mencode does grab about 60% of my proc, it does not grab all available proc - there's about 15-20% IDLE - can you max out the proc?
We are running OS X here...there's no such thing everything gets a chance at a timeslice. Top is a bad tool for judging this sort of thing, and encodes tend to be "bursty"...sometimes low, sometimes high.

No...thank YOU. Its funny...I never really thought anyone would really pay for this, even tho by my reckoning 1 or 2 sucessfully worry-free DVDs would be worth *something*.

However, we did receive a very generous donation today. It makes a difference. It really does.

    Thank you

  30. I am having trouble getting forty-two to work. I have all of the required apps installed and ready and when I insert a DVD and choose SVCD it goes into the terminal and hangs on YUV scaler. Any suggestion to what is causing this or if there is any way to get this to stop. By the way thanks so much Kai, this is really great.
