  1. I have done some test encoding using TMPGenc on a 1 minute piece of footage with the only filter being deinterlace even field, noise reduction and sharpen and it takes approx 3.5hrs to encode to mpeg2 (dvd template). The system I am using is not the fastest in the world and does not meet the recommended spec for tmpgenc I know however I was wondering if I could 'tweak' tmpgenc without having to buy a new PC or upgrade it (which I cant)

    PC is:

    Pentium 2 233
    192mb Ram
    Voodoo 3000 3dfx card

    Any 'useful' advice appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi

    I use a P3 450 and a 230Mb file (Half a movie) takes around 2 hours to convert with TMPGEnc to VCD.mpg

I also have a P2 233 and thought I would use it to convert the second half of the movie, the time it takes is around 3 times the P3 so the 2 hour conversion on the P3 would take 6 hours on the P2

There is a big difference, Sorry to say you need to upgrade.
But I would recommend you upgrade to the P4 when you can, price is dropping slowly. I have been tempted to upgrade this P3, but since its obsolete along with the memory type I have held back for the P4

Stop all programs running from your task bar. Defrag your hard drive before conversion. Try to have the source and destination files on different hard drives. Use a program like Winboost 2001 to tweak all your computer settings, disable the loading of unnecessary programs (drive space, double space etc) enable DMA on your hard drive (If it supports it). Work on half a movie at a time, make sure the original DivX is free from errors (Freeze frames) remove any bad frames before using TMPGEnc.

You could cut 10 minuets off the convertion time with the above

  4. noise reduction by itself literally doubles encode time. sharpen is probably an additional 30-50% extra too.
