  1. I expect forty-two to be released this week. I'm making sure the docs are clear, and that no big gaping holes in forty-two exist.

    Wed is most likely target.

IMPORTANT!!!!! Do not automatically grab the latest versions of mplayer and mencoder and expect forty-two to work as advertised.

The build from January 18 or there about is particularly bad, as it changes framerates without permission. There is some sort of reverse-telecine detection code added that may not neccessarily guess correctly, possibly causing "blocks" or mis/de-syncing.

The forty-two docs will have the recommend version(s) of mencoder and mplayer noted with urls for their retrival, as well as installation instructions.

  3. Last Build to be tested, will be available around 5PM today.

Its perhaps a little faster; for example on my TiBook 800 it takes 7mins to encode a minute of video at the DVD default setting...so you can extrapolate up (or down) from there.

That will not be a problem. The mencoder, mplayer and mpeg2enc binaries for 42 are installed in your /library/application support/forty-two directory, and can coexist with whatever binaries you have installed in your /usr/bin dir.

  9. Wouldn't it be better to embed the binaries into the forty-two app, then use ./osascript to call the local binaries? Simple process and no sudo system installs. I told bilestyle how to do this onetime. Major could do this also.

Not really, this way makes it easy to update the binaries and such if desired, without having to hunt inside the app package contents folder. Not a big advantage, really, but it makes it a little more manageable, and works like a regular MacOS X application. Another (and the main) advantage is for legal reasons, since the user is in charge of downloading and installing the mencoder binary (which includes DeCSS code), the authors are not responsible for extracting video from DVDs.
