  1. Problem:
I use TMPGenc for about a year on my old Win2k PC. Now I've got WinXP operating system and a very strange problem in converting avis.
Tmpg starts converting the file without any probs, but only for about 2 minutes or sometimes 6 minutes.. then the screen freezes and the only way out is too reboot the system (keyboard and mouse are dead). I already read several FAQs but can't solve the problem..
After a new Installation of WinXP (also the new VIA 4in1 Hyperion drivers, new VIA detonator, USB patch, DirectX patch ...) still the same behavior.
I changed some bios settings, but no succsess.
I think there's a problem with the RAM?!
My System temperature isn't critical ..

    System:
    AMD Athlon XP 2100+
    512 DDR RAM
    MSI KT3 VIA333 Ultra 2
    MSI Geforce 4 Ti4200
    Ethernet adapter
    ISDN adapter
    USB Mouse Logitech MX 500

I've seen lockup problems like this when converting older hardware to Windows XP. I didn't spend too much time troubleshooting the problem. Is your hardware supported by XP? In other words, did you check the compatability lists?

  3. I didn't check lists, but Windows XP runs fine so I think the hardware has to be compatible. Maybe it has something to do with directX?
I also have the same freezing problem when converting avis to VCD with NERO. Strange..
Yesterday I read in a topic that I'd extract the audio as wav file and try converting with the wav audio.. it worked for the first time, but the second try again ended in a frozen screen. When I leave the computer alone while running tmpgenc I can be sure that the screen freezes after about 5 minutes. But when I'm working (f.e. surfing internet) than its possible that tmpg finishes without the prob.
    What's the reason??
    A problem with the RAM..

Sounds like a video driver problem. Is your screen saver set to come on? It could also be a problem with Power Saving mode. I've seen both cause problems in XP. The fact that when you continue to work on your PC, you prevent it from screen saver, or sleeping, is a good indicator. Try disabling any power saving features to see if that resolves the problem. On your screen saver, make sure you select BLANK SCREEN, rather than a screen saver. Try these one at a time to see which resolves the problem.

  5. Thankz a lot for your help. It was a problem with the video driver.. I don't understand why it works now, but it doesn't matter!
