  1. I was curious about something....
I realize that a standalone DVD player only plays certain regions (unless you use the hacks).
Does this only apply to store bought or burned DVD disks?....
but not to VCD and SVCD?
The reason I say that is because no matter what type of Divx I convert (Pal,NTSC or NTSC Film) ...they all play quite nicely on my DVD player.

  2. Now this is my understanding and I have minimal knowledge about this.

It applies only to DVD... Any DVD... But they can be authored as "Region 0" (or Region All, same think). And I believe that all Home Editing authoring sofwares will do that. When you copy "store bought" DVD and make copy of it, you can make it region free. I never saw refion free DVD in US, but you can see them more in (only place wher I went to buy DVD) Europe.

Yes, only DVDs have Region Coding. Incidentally, and amsuingly enough, in some countries (Australia, for instance) it is illegal to seell a DVD player in which Region Coding cannot be disabled. So we've got hte hilarious situation that in America it is technically illegal to hack a DVD player to eliminate REgion Coding, while in Australia it is technically illegal to import or sell DVD players in which Region Coding cannotbe disabled.

  4. I pose a Question:

I have a HP DVD1200i that is now Region free, I buy Ritek blanks which I bet are region free also, since they are so cheap and either come from China or Korea(these 2 countires don't give a crap about regions).

So if I burn these DVD's is is possible that they are region free DVD's, or does it depend on what I use to burn them with, Nero, DVDxCopy, MyDVD, Recordmax?

  6. It depend on how you author them. (My understanding of authoring = making VIDEO_TS dir with VOB files from MPEG2 files)
