Please list software packages or compilations that you are using or more importantly are finding success with in going from dvd9 to dvd5. It would also be helpful for a link to a guide or the like. Thanx

I use 3 freeware tools for every thing I have done. I have changed DVD9-DVD5 I have done it all with just these three little tools. So if anyone tells you that you need to buy any fancy software packages they lie! DVD Decrypter, InfoEdit, and ReMPEG2 are all I use in my ripping and converting to DVDR. I use Nero to burn, but there are tons of burning programs out that do just as good. These are the two easy to follow tuts I used when I was a newbie that got me started.
1. Use when you can rip your DVD9 down to around 5Gig. Use the tut that is reply to the orignal tut by EnemyWithin.

2. This tut is when you rip your DVD9 and it stays above 5Gig. This means you must rencode which takes time, but to me really doesnt change the quality much.

Last thing if you are a noob and really dont understand the whole thing about ripping the DVD9(which most newer DVD's are now) to see how much the movie itself is follow the first tut and it will show you the whole ripping process and what you need to do. Remember if you have to rencode use the second tut really easy and really works.
Gl man! Once you get it down it kinda gets fun makin your own movies. Then when you get this down the fun really begins with editing and all the things you can do with Unlead! :P -
You can get these three tools right here with no hassle and these are direct links from this site.

When you say "does not change the quality much" what kind of defects are you referring to. Screen jumps, blockiness, shudders, audio synch????? I am looking for a method to get the best quality backup. I tried to follow a guide for rempeg and it came out jumpin all over the screen. Then I tried one with TMPG and the audio was out of synch and the screen froze every now and then. Then I tried one with CCE and was unable to produce something at all. The furthest I have gotten so far is one that has very little screen jumps and no audio trouble using dvd2dvdr (NTSC format). I have seen samples that people have supposedly done with a quality that is way above that of a SVCD although I suspect you could just rip an SVCD and burn it to a DVD and that would be a similar result. Any suggestions?

This is for DVD 9 to 5 Over the 4.5 GB Size other wise its just a stright rip and copy.
I have great success with this method. It is not all free ware but I have tried many guides and software and found this method flawless on each attempt. You have to decide for your self what works for you and a cost to quality ratio. I have used this system for quite some time now and no costers. SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, TMPGEnc, and Author with Dazzle DVD Complete. ALL Works Great found only by trial and error on my part.
