I have no problem at all ripping the first episode, but no matter what I try, I can't seem to rip episodes 2,3 and/or 4, everytime I get episode 1 & that's it. As per the tutorial I'm using SmartRipper then DVD2AVI then TMPGEnc. I've also tried cladDVD & DVD Decrypter for the rip, but have had no success. I suspect I need some help. What am I doing wrong?
Hopefull,

Yeah, i am having the same problem with the red dwarf DVD, although i cant copy even the first one..help plz

The way I did was pretty simple. Download DVD Decrypter and it will show you each of the episodes as it references the ifo file. Rip each episode in a separate folder (ie 1,2,3,...). Then just use DVD2AVI then tmpegnc to encode, vcdeasy for chapters and burn. I put one episode per cd in standard vcd format and I am happy with the quality since I will probably only watch them once. You can use a vcd non-standard if you want to put 2 episodes on but the quality will suffer, up to you...

Thank you vwguy60, that is working like a charm.
Damn, but I love this Internet thing.

Glad I can help but I do have to give the credit to this site. There was a guide to doing pretty much the same thing but it was not for vcd but rather ripping to dvd. VCD is fine for me and if I want the movie really bad, I just buy it to take full advantage of dvd quality and sound. Good luck!

@ Zaun, when you did the Fawlty Towers box set did TMPGEnc encode the files properly? When I tried it the subject of the picture had a wavy line around it whenever there was movement by the camera/subject.
I've tried several settings in DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc but nothing seems to cure the problem.
Can anyone help please, or at least post the settings I need to use? -
Nothing quite as nice as FlaskMPEG for these situations...
Use DVD Decrypter, rip the entire disc to HDD.
Then use FlaskMPEG to load the IFO file of each episode in turn, choose the video/audio/subtitle stream you want. Preview to make sure you've selected the right thing. Click on "Run".

can you help with the settings I need with FlaskMPEG? I've never used it before and I'm a bit of a newbie.
-
Go download the latest 0.7.8.x beta.
Install it.
Use DVD Decrypter to rip your entire DVD (or use SmartRipper in "file mode").
Load FlaskMPEG.
Open the relevant IFO file.
Choose the correct video/audio +/- subtitle stream.
Load the "VCD" profile appropriate (i.e., PAL or NTSC).
For VCD, you should choose the bbMPEG plugin.
That's it.
bbMPEG isn't that good an MPEG encoder, and if you are interested in FlaskMPEG, getting the Panasonic MPEG encoder plugin (commercial) or frameserving to TMPGEnc is recommended.

Not wishing to sound stupid (but doing so is unavoidable), but is there a profile setting for DVD rather than VCD, or does this not matter?
-
Don't remember if there is a profile for DVD, but you can set the new version of FlaskMPEG to do no processing and since you are going from a DVD source, it will be right for DVD.

but doesn't that just give a straight 1:1 size file? I use TMPGENcPlus to encode, and what I want is to encode stuff like Fawlty Towers without the video going all screwy.
-
Um.. what I mean is that FlaskMPEG doesn't do any processing on the source (i.e., change aspect ratio or framesize) and simply passes the original data to the output plugin (be it AVI or MPEG encoder).
