My friend has one of these. It's cool but the quality of the VCD is not any better than what you can create on your Mac.
Also there are no editing features.

VCD & SVCD Support For Mac -
what do you wean by editing. Like choosing certains scenes?
I downloaded a demo of what the quality is compared to the mac.
Its hella better. there is very little pixelation on the dark scenes but over all its way better.
Plus since it encodes in realtime, it goes way faster.
I most likely going to get it for x-mas.
(also i just checked the auction, and did one of you buy one?)"Good Luck 007"

I'm not saying that it isn't cool. I'm just saying that you are limited in what you can do. Basically it is a VCR that records to CD's as VCD's. Since my friend has one, I have seen it work. It doesn't suck but it isn't as good as what I have been able to get with my MAC. If I up the Bitrate when creating a VCD on my MAC I get great results. Plus it has a hard time with high motion video. I watched a VCD that it made of a recorded movie where there was a lot of movement and you did see artifacts. It also had difficulty playing VCDs that were not made by it. I don't know about professional VCD's but it skipped on VCD's made by my MAC. It played it's own stuff fine.
What I mean by editing is, you get all of the commercials. Short of pausing the record while you are watching a show that you record, you are going to have to take the VCD and move it to your MAC, edit out the commercials and make a new VCD. Plus no menus etc ...
If you are seriously considering buying it, I would think about spending your $300 on a ReplayTV. With the ethernet port on the unit and DVArchive, you can move the MPEG-2 files right from the replay to your MAC and make VCD or SVCD. Plus you can get rid of the commercials. The Replay is way cooler than the Terrapin.
I tormented over it too and I decided to go with the ReplayTV instead, it is much more flexible and cool.
Your choice. But check out ReplayTV first.

VCD & SVCD Support For MAC -
I would mostly be doing it for movies.
My PSone has a VCD card so i can watch them on my LCD screen.
Plus im running a G3 tower. Which ive been begging my Parents to get me a new CPU.
I have had a hell of a time trying to get an actual VCD, that was synced, and with good quality, from my MAC. But i haven't suceeded yet.
Ive made 1 vcd from a 20min DVD that worked but no 2 disc ones yet.
I just want a fast, effective way of taking my DVd's and putting them to VCD.
That DVD thingy for mac was SWEET!, but its 400$. Little too pricy for me."Good Luck 007"
