i am trying to encode my avi files to mpeg..i am using tmpgenc, wondering what are most of you out there using for bitrate? loading videocd (PAL).mcf?
whats the best quality picture when burning onto cd-r?
also besides dvd-r or cd-r..will cd-rw work on dvd standalone players??

Firstly, for standard VCDs, just leave the bitrate alone. VCDs only support one bitrate for both the audio and video.
If you change the bitrate, you will be making an "XVCD", which essentially means a non-compliant VCD. Many DVD players will still play these though.
CD-R/W only works (flawlessly) on those DVD players designed to read CD-R/W media.
DVD-R and DVD-RW media work on most DVD players but not all.
Virtualdub is a linear AVI editing program.

If you live in an NTSC country, use the NTSC template (i.e., North America, Japan).
If you live in a PAL country (i.e., everywhere else), use PAL.

For TMPGEnc 12h (I presume it would be similar for other versions): Options --> Environmental Settings --> External tool --> Layer 2 --> enter the path too toolame
