  1. Just wondered I use Smartripper, then DVD2SVCD (using CCE 2.5SP) and finally VCDEasy to burn. But will this encode to SVCD or VCD and retain the Surround sound ?

If not can this be done, and if so is there a guide anywhere ?

Just wanted to know before I go and buy a Surround Sound kit

You can retain surround, but it must be mpeg surround 5.1 it cannot be DD ( ac3 ) or DTS.

Not all DVD players or receivers understand mpeg multichannel 5.1 either, so it's not guarteed to work either.

Another thought is DTS would be nearly impossible for VCD since full throttel DTS is 1.4 mbps that's higher than the combined audio/video maximum bitrate.

  4. Well, VCD's aren't very good to start with, and good quality SVCDs don't fir a lot on a disc, so it you put better audio on it, it will leave even less for picture. that means either 1-sacrifice picture quality for better audio or 2-even less minutes per disc...

Its an audio format that really never took off. In order to play it your dvd player has to output the format and your reciever has to support it. This combination is extremely hard to come by. With the exception of probably only a handful of DVD players, the Philips line seems to be the only brand of player which can correctly export MC mpeg audio in a SVCD. As for the reciever, if it doesnt specifically state that it supports MC audio in the manual, then it almost certainly doesn't.

Philips released software which can encode to 5.1 mc mpeg audio. DVD2SVCD uses this software if you set it to 5.1 output and I believe there is another piece of software called hypercube? Not sure, I've never tested it.
