  1. I have here a 715mb mpg file which I am trying to burn onto a Memorex 700mb CD. I don't know if there are any tricks to actually burn it, because it says the file size is too big to burn.

I tried taking out a few minutes of the video in tmpg or virtual dub, but then it wants to compress in another codec and thus making the video close to 1GB in size.

Anybody have any ideas? I don't want to re-compress, and I don't want to take off minutes.

    The FILE information is:

    ---------------------------------------------
    Video Info
    ---------------------------------------------
    Encoder..............: TMPGEnc Plus 2.57
    Stream Type..........: MPEG-1 Video

  2. did you use the mpeg tools in tmpgenc? if not you could use that and then slice off the beginning and end of the mpeg to cut it down in size

It looks like you are trying to make a VCD and it should fit fine. Your memorex 700meg CD is rated 80min/700meg for mode-1 recording. VCDs and SVCD's use mode-2. That same CD when recorded mode-2 can hold 800meg (more if you overburn.) If it won't burn properly (mode-2) than there is something wrong with the configuration of your CD burning software.

  4. What CD burning program do you use for Mode 2? I have Nero, CDRWin, and Alcohol 120%.

I see that there is a "Video-CD" part of Nero. Should I choose "ISO Level 2 (Max. of 31 chars) ?

I'm pretty new with burning vcds, appreciate your help!

Any CD Burning program that supports VCD/SVCD should be able to create 800meg VCDs. I have Nero and was never able to get it to work properly. The "ISO Level 2 (Max. of 31 chars)" does not do anything with capacity. I think changes need to be made in the Preferences>>General>>Status Bar section, something like changing 80min to 90min. I believe those numbers are mode-1 only, 90min mode-1 would be about 800meg mode-1. If you can't get it working I suggest a search through the forums for creating 800meg VCD with Nero (this question has been asked before), or try something else like VCDEasy.

I use VCDEasy exclusively as my only VCD, CVD, SVCD burning tool.
Note: If you choose to try VCDEasy you may have to install the ForceASPI drivers (ForceASPI Drivers and VCDEasy are both available in the tools section, this website) to get it to work.

  6. I just made a coaster. Tried burning with these options:

VideoCD type: VCD 2.0 (I don't know if this is right)
    Volume label: CSEVID2CD1_2

Bin Output File: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\videocd.bin

Then added "dbte2_d1.mpg" to the Mpeg1 Video/Picture files section.

    and clicked "Go"...

Maybe it failed because I only have 9mb left on my HD?

    Error Log:

    Scyzoryk:

Having 9meg of space left on the hard drive definitely could cause a coaster. Any program could fail with that little space left. VCDEasy creates a binary "image" before it writes to the CD. It then burns that image to the CD. The image contains the correct file structure, the correct filenames, any chapter points you set, etc. It does look like VCDEasy finished creating the image. I would never start any VCD related operation with less than 5gig of hard drive space free. Heck, I have two 120gig drives in my video encoding system and I still plan on getting larger drives as soon as I find a job, again. I would at least free up 1gig before trying again.

It may have found something wrong with your MPEG file; "this is the UNSTABLE development branch!" If these errors persist I suggest try unchecking "Perform some MPEG compliance checks" (It's below the MPEG files field.) and then try again. The VCDEasy website, www.VCDEasy.org has other info that may be helpful, including a FAQ.

Don't worry about making "coasters". It comes with the territory. I've made over a hundred "coasters" in the last 8 months learning this stuff. I'm finally to the point where I keep a number of CD-RW disks around that I use to test new ideas, filters, settings, etc.

  8. Yep, your problem is probably not enough hdd buffer space for CDRDAO during burning --> buffer underrun.

You can safely ignore this message:
this is the UNSTABLE development branch!
This is the default message when VCDXBUILD runs. If anything, it highlights how humble hvr (the author of VCDImager that is the guts behind VCDEasy) is. He could (rightly) claim that his proggy is God's gift to VCD authoring but he doesn't.

    Regards.
