Capturing in Premiere..Trouble with TMPGenc

Ok, I capture in Premiere via Firewire from my DV cam. once I make the AVI file, I can open it perfectly with TMPGEnc. But if I cap a file, edit it with premiere and export the movie out of premiere to AVI of the same settings as the one I capped, TMPGEnc won't open it. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

Why go from Premiere to TMPG?

If you have an older version of Premeire, grab one of the MPEG plugins.
If you have version 6 or higher export to MPEG directly. I have v6.5 and export directly to MPEG, just tweak the MPEG template as you would in TMPG

Maybe because TmpGenc is considered a better encoder than the ones that work with Premiere?

abidon, if Tmpgenc wont open your file you could always try frameserving from virtualdub or avisynth. Or maybe you could use dvd2avi to create a project file (.d2v) and get TmpGenc to open that. There are several guides to these methods under the HOWTO sections on your left.

Actually Bugster, I have done head to head tests with Premiere V6.5 and TMPGEnc 2.58

For a one hour video clip, Premiere's MPEG2 output was 30 minutes quicker than TMPGEnc and when played back in Power DVD, I could not see any difference in quality.

Fine. I never actually said TmpGenc WAS better than Premiere, I actually said that a possible reason for using it rather than the mpeg-encoder that is supplied with Premiere is that some people CONSIDER it to be better. If you are happy with the speed and quality of the Premier encoder, fine, stick with it.

Just remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just because you can't tell the difference between TmpGenc and your Premier encodes doesn't mean someone else isn't allowed to prefer one over the other.

thanks for your replies fellas. i couldn't figure out why tmpg wouldn't open the files but the encoder in premiere works just as well. thanks for the help

I'm a newbie at this... but how do you export an MPEG-2 from Premiere. I'm currently capturing from Premiere then using TMPG to encode. If I can do it all within Premiere then that might be better.

BTW, is there a certain way of encoding MPEG-2 in order for SVCDs to play on the Apex 660?
