Now I want guys with good eyes and good sets to answer this question especcially if CCE i being used. You see 3000 cgr at 720x576 will not block in CCE no matter what you do. Its too good an encoder. The problem is that it just looks crappy and undeatealed in high motion scens. I have good eyes and can see thias for instance the matrix is very noisy and crappy whereas the mummy returns is fantastic looking.

    So whats the quailty like?

  2. well I am coming from another point to you I use my Panasonic DMR-E20 to record on DVD-R and I use the cheap Ritek $1 ones and every 60 dubs I have done, looks just like the original, perfect, now I want to move maybe to a DVD Burner also, so I have had friends send me a few differnt DVD-R's burned on different burners at different rates and none so far none have come to quality I have been getting with my E20, at this point unless I can see a better quality dub and also in 5.1, I see no reason to even buy a burner at this time and burned DVD-R's ripped take twice as long as my recordings do on my E20. One is I can get 4.7 gigs used when I record on the E20 and the bitrate varies with VBR from 3800 to 5000 on the 2 hour mode, if I record a 90-100 minute movie in the FR VBR mode my bitrate jumps up to 4500 to 6000.
As I am only getting Dolby Digital 2.0 on dubs I would like to also have a DVD Burner so I can keep the 5.1 DD intacted.
I understand I do benefit greatly because this machine has a full frame Time base corrector built in it and all kinds of different Y/C and Edge Filters and enhancers all built by panasonic themselves.

to tell the truth I know hardware would give the best quailty(theorectically, personally I still think software can do it!). But I would like to get the FULL dvd. By full I mean extras,menues,DD5.1(as you said) and all of that.

As for speed, Well I think you are wrong there. Anybody with a good setup of say 2.5ghz athlon will get way better than real time speeds with CCE. So a 1 pass + vaf which woul'd have a better bitrate distributation then your panasonic SHOULD look better.

Since its a consumer type player I would say the encoder in it wouldn't be really top class. Perhaps CCE would be better.

Right I have got myself in a huff over this topic.

I think its time you did a wee test

try comparing say a copy of the mummy first done with your current dvd recorder set-up then with dvd2avi prjt file into CCE and see what the outputs are like.
