Save the dat file to your hard drive, rename as mpg. Open tmpgenc and select the mpg file as your video/audio source. Click file->output to file->wave file.

Are the .dat files just standard .mpg files renamed for the prupose of the VCD then?

This is 4 guitar_george_skank;
actually I just want to extract the audio from a vcd & save it either as .wav or .aif for the purpose of recording it as audioCD. -
Just use the TMPG method described by craigtucker then. That should work a treat. Should of thought of that myself

I tried the virtualDub but the audio quality isn't that as good as the original .dat file. It sounds like there's reverb or somewhat erratic. Anyway I'll try the tmpgenc, I wish it works.

What settings did you use in VirtualDub? I presume you chose No compression (PCM) and didn't change the sampling rate? Anyway, TMPG shgould do the job just fine. Good luck.
