Hi,
is it possible to encode a 16:9 DVD-movie to 4:3, so that neither CCE nor DVD2AVI creates this ugly borders and that the aspect ratio on mz 4:3 TV is alright? I think the borders take some compression-bitrate so i'd like to disable them...

Sorry didn't realize you were using cce. This is for tmpgnc, I believe all you do is when you encode it with tmpgnc is select no margin on your arrange setting tab. Under aspect select 4:3 and under source aspect select 16:9 since your movie was 16:9 to start with.

you need those letterbox bars to see the movie in it's correct aspect ratio.
also CCE & DVD2AVI do not make the black bars, they're probably already on your DVD. -
You aren't very clear in what you want or what you're doing.
Firstly, what exactly are you trying to create? If it is a SVCD or VCD, you need those black bars unless you cut out the sides which is a very bad idea (pan and scan cut out the least essential parts). The resolution of these is fixed so there is no way you can create a standard SVCD or VCD with a 16:9 aspect ratio without the black bars. If you're trying to create (x)SVCD or (x)VCD i.e. a non standard one, then you can create one with the 16:9 aspect ratio without the black bars stored in the video. You will need to use a non standard res. However, even if they do work with your player, there is no guarantee they will appear as the correct aspect ratio. (I would reckon in most cases they won't) You could use a standard res with 16:9 and still not store blackbars (letterbox). This would be termed anamorphic. However since VCDs and SVCDs where not designed for this and there is no way to tell the player that it's anamorphic, you can be 100% sure the aspect ratio will be screwed when it's displayed. Also, it's not use doing this unless you are either reducing the resolution or have an anamorphic DVD.
In any case, you will still see black bars if the aspect ratio is correct even if they are not stored (if you didn't know this, go learn up on the diff between pan and scan and widescreen).
BTW, the black bars are not always stored on the DVD. They can be, but increasingly they aren't thanks to anamorphic widescreen. Even if they are stored, they can of course easily be removed with a properly set up program. The black bars are usually the same length and so the program just has to take the middle. Even if there is something odd, you just have adjust how much of the top and bottom to cut off and voila! One scene is enough since the precise position never changes. In fact, it might be better to do this in all cases just in case some detail somehow makes it into the black portion (which the encoder will try to encode even though you don't want it)
Of course, the resolution will be fixed i.e. without the blackbars your vertical resolution will be less since you've cut off part of the image. However, the encoder does not have to encode the black bars.
