Can Premiere export un-edited MPEG2 from the timeline to a Microsoft AVI? If so how?
I'm totally new to Premiere so this may be a daft question for Premiere vets. I recently obtained a copy of 5.1 but my firewire card is not supported. I am now playing with the V6 tryout version and it seems great for DV AVIs. However I have a few MPEG2 files that I would like to convert back to AVI and re-edit.
What I have tried doing is load the MPEG2 file into Premiere timeline and then export as a Micosoft DV AVI with no changes or edits, with a view to re-importing it back again to edit as an AVI (I realise I can't edit as an MPEG2), but the exported AVI is really jerky and has broken sound and therefore unusable
I could use Vidomi and Huffyuv but I really wanted to minimise disk space useage and try to convert back to a DV AVI.
Thanks.

Premiere is great for editing DV, but seems to struggle with file conversions (in my experience).
I would try ULEAD VideoStudio 6 for the conversion. It is very tolerant of file types and conversions. -
There is no faster conversion from MPEG2 to avi than Xmpeg or the later versions of Flask that support YUV. You can 2 pass vbr to Divx/Xvid with stunning results. see doom9.org

EricB,
I will download a trial of VideoStudio 6 to give it a try, just one qusetion - does it have it's own DV codec that will enable me to load an MPEG2 and export it as a DV AVI, which I can then open and edit with Premiere?
Thanks. -
Hi,
I use Premiere 6.0 and now 6.5 and have had no problems with importing MPEGs onto the timeline and then exporting them to either M2V files or to raw AVI format.
The only time I get jerky action etc is if you play the mpeg file directly without first having rendered.
(I now do not have this issue as I have a Canopus DV Storm2 Mpeg Capture/Encoder Card)
