  1. I have some 30 minute video captures that I am processsing thru VirtualDub to make VCDs with TMPGEnc. But I keep running up against the Windows 98 2GB limit! I'm told that frameserving may be the answer, but I can't get it to work. What I'm doing now is to capture only short segments, converting them to mpegs with TMP and then tying them together. It's a pain! Anyone know how I can do 30 minute segments?

    Thanks much,

  2. to frameserve with v-dub, open your video and do whatever editing or filtering you may need to. Click the "files" tab and towards the bottom pick "start frameserver", you get another window with a start tab at the bottom and then it will ask you to save. Name it whatever you want but remember to add a vdr extension, IE, "my clip.vdr"

We're done with v-dub for the moment, but leave it running.

Start TMPG and browse where you saved the file and load the vdr file you just saved, do any other processing you want to, pick the audio and video bitrate and press start.

If you can't find or open the vdr file, try to convert it with VFAPI and then open the VFAPI avi file......everything else will stay the same

  3. Tried that, but the frameserver won't work. I go thru all the steps, and it just sits there - 0 frames captured. The VirtualDub page says there's a bug with frameserving in 1.4.10 and to install files from 1.4.9 - I tried that, too - no luck. What now?

    Marknyc5,
look to the left under FAQ, search for frameserving then for frameserving with virtualdub.
Follow the directions exactly and voila. I know, I use it alot and it works just fine frame serving to Tmpgenc.

  5. Hi,

I read the FAQ, and did that - but the frameserver sticks. I get to the screen that says "Frameserver mode - VirtualDub" but all the output says 0. Number of frames served is 0, etc. It does read Frameclients installed: AVIFile only, but nothing happens!

You should try AviSynth. It can join a plethora (what a funny word) of files with the simple "+" operator. And you can frameserve in the same process.
    Hello.

  7. Thanks - the problem is, I already have done everything in VirtualDub, and am ready to make the mpegs. I don't want to start again in AVISynth. Does anyone know why frameserving won't work for me? How can I troubleshoot this?

    Thanks!

  8. You sure you loaded the vdr file in tmpeg?? Did tmpeg do anything since you say virtualdub reported 0 captures...

    1. In virtualdub, load your avi file by file/open avi file
    2. Start frameserve by file/start frameserve
    3. A menu will pop up, just press Start, nothing else.
    4. A nother menu will pop up, type in a name, ex. show.avi.vdr or just show.vdr
    5. Frameserver mode - virtual dub will pop up...
    6. Open up TMPEG, for video source, load up that file show.avi.vdr, or show.vdr... TMPEG will do something (analyze or rearange the order or something)
    7. Choose your audio file, could me an wav, mp3,mp2 or the same file show.avi.vdr , show.vdr
    8. Hit start and tmpeg should start encode from virtualdub, in virutaldub frameserver, it will start showing the statistics...

If this doesn't work, maybe you aren't following something correctly, maybe you need to list the steps you are doing step by step, and files you installed....

  9. I agree with the last post. Do you have everything installed? In the v-dub folder did you run the auxsetup.exe? You may also have to merge the proxyon.reg key (remember to reboot)

If Frameserver does not work, repeat this first step:
Install the AVIFile frameclient support first by run the AuxSetup.exe that you find the virtualdub folder and click on install handler.
(You may have to restart Windows after installing the handler)
-- How to Frameserve with Virtualdub

Do not forget to reboot after running AuxSetup.exe and installing the handler.
    Hello.

  11. Duh! I didn't get that the frameserver in VirtualDub didn't actually do anything until you started making the mpg in TMP. I thought something was supposed to happen before you opened the .vdr file in TMP. Someone has to make these things clear to us dummies!

    Frameserver is working fine.

    Thanks for all the help!

Ok I'm in the same boat here - basically identical situation.
    Followed those numbered steps,

I hit 'save' after step 4, after step 6 (not using the wizard) I select the .vdr file I just saved and I get a can't open or unsupported error message. Each of the .AVI files I made from the segemented capture play so I know they're good. Any ideas?

I do not wish to insult your intelligence, but I see no mention of these steps in your prodeure:
Install the AVIFile frameclient support first by run the AuxSetup.exe that you find the virtualdub folder and click on install handler.
(You may have to restart Windows after installing the handler)
-- How to Frameserve with Virtualdub

What can you tell us about doing or not doing them?
    Hello.

left that out - sorry for not being complete. Yes I did do that and rebooted the machine. Also in Tmpgenc when I press 'video source' the file type 'vdr' isn't one of the options listed. I have to select 'all files'.

The VD___.dll files are in the windows/system directory. I brought up regedit and did searches for AVIfile and VDremote and several matches were found. I tried an uninstall handler and a re-install with the same results.

OK I followed some links in the Tmpgenc frameserver guide and saw the stuff about Vdub 1.4.10 frameserver not working. I copied the DLL mentioned into my Windows/System32 directory and tried it again. It started and is now processing.

Some other questions. I used a 'de-interlace' filter in Vdub when making a 480x480 AVI capture. When opening the file in Vdub for the frame server, do I need to specify that again in the filter?. I also reselected the huffy compression option I used when making the capture. Are these options meaningless when doing a frameserve? When doing some non-segmented files previously I did some cropping etc in Tmpgenc. For segemented files with the frameserve option will I need to do all that in Vdub now? since I'm noit using hte project wizard how does Tmp know whether to ue Mpeg 1 or 2 (I'm trying to make a SVCD for use on a standalone DVD player)
    thanks for your help.
