DVD menu disappears and movie freezes briefly sometimes

I own the FIRSTLINE FLAV10 (Carrefour), which seems to be a DESAY DS-8338 clone without the mic/karaoke front plugs.

I noticed that dvd *menus briefly disappear* when changing from animated parts to still pictures (and viceversa).
Moreover sometimes during playback the movie skips/freezes very briefly.

Is it a memory buffer underrun? Is that a "normal" limit of cheaper players? Or may it be a trouble with this unit?
Can it be solved with a firmware upgrade?

It happened a strange thing... I fumbled around with the SETUP menu of the player (changed from 4:3 Pan&Scan to Letterbox or something like that) and the menus playback on different discs became seamless (no more 1 sec blank screen).
But then I must have done something wrong cause after a couple trials with some other disc (maybe cause I let the player go in standby) the problem came back....

What can I do?
