  1. I did a test rip of Independence Day picked the first 4 chapters and was pretty happy with the results. I used TPMG to do the encoding. I do have a couple of questions before I do my first full sized rip and burn...

I do not seem to have any chapters. How do I get it to use the same chapters as dvd? Or is that a bad idea?

The movie is rather long 2hr 32min according to dvd2svcd. What is the best way to handly spanning?

Will 3 CD-Rs be enough? Can I tell it to make it fit on 3 or is that a bad idea?

    My test encode was...
    2 pass VBR.
    Highest quality(very slow) motion search
    Bottom field first field order

    Under advanced:
    10bit
    Use Floating point DCT
    No Motion Search
    GOP setting (top down) 1,4,3,1,0
    Detect scene change

I know this will take a life time to rip and encode so I want to do it right!

    Thanks!

  2. You should be able to use chapters. Under the CD Image tab check on DVD Chapters, then under PBC Type try 'PBC Use Selections' but you may need to try different ones to see what works on your player. If you still don't get chapters, you can try Fixed Chapters and set the number of seconds, the default is 60 seconds so you may want to raise that to say 300 (5 mins). But try DVD Chapters first, this should work, then you'll have the same chapters as the DVD.

Your 2.5 hour movie should fit nicely and look great on 3 cd's. I generally put an hour per cd, but you can do more or less, its a trade-off between quality and convenience. For me, 1-hr per cd looks great.

I can't help with your TMPGEnc settings, as I use CCE. But I would recommend changing the quality from Highest to High, you won't really notice a difference and it will encode much quicker. I would suggest you do 2-3 small chapters as a test, use a CD-RW and you'll know if your chapter settings work, then try the full movie. For reference, I have an Athlon XP 1500, and a 2-hr movie takes me 3.5 hours total beginning to end including ripping, but I use CCE. Good luck!

    2 pass VBR.
High quality motion search <-- changed from highest
Bottom field first field order <--- you dont need to set this as it will be and is progressive source

    Under advanced:
10bit <-- 9 is ok from dvd as that is also the source
    Use Floating point DCT
    No Motion Search
GOP setting (top down) 1,4,3,1,0 <-- use default , this may not be compatable on all players
    Detect scene change

3 cd will be ok - but 4 is better of course

  4. I'd use smart ripper then DVDX or just DVDX rather than that other app

  5. Thanks for the reply. The chapters are working I guess....If I hit the 3 I go to chapter 3. Somehow I thought that I could bring up the menu but that did not work. Could be me though, I just got this player and I am not used to it yet (meaning I did not read the manual ).

TMPG took 18hrs to encode, I think that I need to back off on some of the settings.

I can not get CCE to play on my DVD player. Plays fine on my PC, but just sits on the DVD2SVCD logo in my DVD player. Was really hoping to see the diference in quality but so far "no joy".

  6. Glad to hear the chapters are working. No, you won't get the menu, this is strictly for ripping the main movie.

CCE is Cinema Craft Encoder. It is a program that runs on your pc, not your DVD player. It does your video conversion, just like TMPGEnc does. I've used both, and in my humble opinion it runs faster and produces better results. The downside is it costs big bucks, although there is a free demo version and I hear there's a crack, but I wouldn't know

Take a look at this comparison chart... http://www.vcdhelp.com/comparison

  7. I think that I gave the wrong impression...the movie that I encoded with CCE will not play on my DVD player but will play on my PC.

I did not mean to give the impression that I was trying to play CCE on my DVD player!

I still have not gotten a CCE encoded movie to play on my DVD player. Is it possible that some players will not play a CCE encoded movie?

sure if the GOP is set incorrectly or the bit rate is to high or the frame rate is incorrect or mux'd incorrect - in all of the above cases , it will play on a PC though .

  9. For those who may be able to help my settings that I tried with CCE are listed under the post with this title: "Works with TPMG but no CCE, any ideas?" in this forum.

    thanks
