  2. Here goes the list as I see it, any contributions regarding something that I have left out (FOR PLAYBACK ONLY) are welcome:

    Ogg - http://tobias.everwicked.com/oggds.htm

    Huffyuv - http://math.berkeley.edu/~benrg/huffyuv.html

    DivX 5.02 - http://www.divx.com/divx/

    DivX 3.11 - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html (Like I said, I didn't need this to play DivX 3 files, just DivX 5)

Mpeg2 - http://www.elecard.com/products/mpeg2decoder.shtml (If you don't have a hardware MPEG2 decoder and if you don't have or don't want to use PowerDVD or WinDVD)

    AC3 codec - http://download.divxmovies.com/ac3codec.zip

    Xvid codec - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html

    DivX Antifreeze -
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/antifreeze_filter.html (Only necessary if you have problems with the video playback in certain Divx files locking while the sound continues)

    Quicktime Player - http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

    Real Player - http://www.real.com/

Latest Windows Media Codecs - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/default.asp

This is about as simple as I can make it without using a codec package like Nimo, which always invlove risks.

    Hope this helps, Cheers all

EDIT, SEE BELOW: That no double-post thing is getting REALLY annoying

Well, as far as Huffyuv goes, I have actually never used this for capture since it became possible to capture directly to DivX, and I don't really know for SURE whether or not it is really necessary for playback, but it just makes sense that if you capture something using a certain codec (Huffyuv is still widely used), you will need it to play back the file. Anyway, it couldn't hurt anything at all to install Huffyuv.

As to PowerDVD, the way i understand it is that PowerDVD uses it's own decoder, it does not install a codec for use with the Directshow component of Windows, which Elecard does. So if you install the Elecard codec, you can use this with any directshow compatible player (nearly all) while PowerDVD (as well as WinDVD for that matter) will still use it's own decoder, no confusion will take place.

    Hope this anwers your question,
    Prospero

You're not likely to find a HuffyUV-encoded AVI file for download, if that's what you're asking. HuffyUV is lossless and doesn't take much CPU, so it's a good format for capturing and editing. The files are very large and most machines won't play a HuffyUV-encoded AVI smoothly, so it's not a good format for online distribution.

  7. I'm not sure why so many people recommend the ELECARD codec for MPEG2 when there's a free one without the annoying Logo and without messing up playback of other codecs (which went away for me once I uninstalled it).

It's Fraunhofer video and audio codecs at
