  1. Yes, I know they're not the SAME.

But is the chipset the same? I'm thinking of upgrading my ADS Instant DVD to the PVR USB model, but the info on the web site only lists half D1 resolution for MPEG2 (the 250 lists full res). The Instant DVD can do full res D1, and it looks good at 5.5Mb for my purposes.

If it's not supported, is there a software hack available to make it so?

    Thanks!

No the PVR USB come with iTCV12 where the PVR 250 come with iTVC15

  3. Thanks. So, I read a post elsewhere that MPEG2 made by the PVR USB is not DVD compatible. I know some half D1 res files are (IIRC the ones from my IDVD are), but these are not?

Seems interesting that they'd make a unit so close to smoking the IDVD but left out a couple key abilities.

I happen to be a lucky one who doesn't have sync issues with the IDVD on my system, so that solution works for me at this point, but better quality is always welcome (that, and the IDVD's MPEG1 sucks...).

As for DVD compatible 704 is compatible for DVD that what it start out at before they upgrade it to 720.
To go full 720x480 display Jester700 you need USB2 device to handel the bandwith.

  5. I realize 704x480 is DVD compatible - that's the res my InstantDVD unit makes and it works fine. My question is, are the MPEG2 files made by the PVRUSB compatible, because a newsgroup post said they weren't.

I don't think bandwidth is the issue WRT resolution. We're only talking about 16 pixels - that's about 2% increase in resolution. If a 704x480 file is no sweat over USB 1.1 at 4Mb bandwidth, 720x480 shouldn't be an issue at 5Mb.

In any case, the issue is pretty moot if the PVRUSB only does halfD1 - 352x480. In my tests with the InstantDVD, halfD1 looked visibly worse, even on my TV. Maybe the coder is so good in the PVRUSB that its half res looks better than the IDVD's full res. But I want to know that, and know that I can burn those files to DVD without re-encoding before I spend the $$ on it.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes there are DVD compatible or should say that depend on the DVD Authoring Software you use it what make it what make it DVD compatible in the first place like all thing min Authoring Software don't work with 704 frame size or there code don't allow for reading HW made MPEG files.
Ulead DVD MovieFactory is the best one for reading HW made MPEG files and it only that dosen't change the audio format to PCM which make ever body use 2 disk in sted of 1 disk for a 2hour show.
Yes that ture it only 16 pixels but even 16 pixels can add up to lot over slow bus like USB.
Far I know it can do 704x480 at 6MBit/sec with all update drivers how ever 4MBit/sec is better choees in not over killing the USB bus.
