  1. Hi,
So does anyone know the exact answer how far Pioneer DVC503 would go in terms of XSVCD bitrates? I would like to find out the maximum
CBR bitrate that it can play without chopped playback.

The reason I am asking is that this site has many posts indicating quite different readings for this player. I would presume some people just don't care what they report ...

All information I found so far indicates this player won't go any higher than standard SVCD, though that's not what this site has in DVD player rating.

    Thanks!

  2. I happen to have a DV-C503 and I have done some test on the max bitrate it handle for SVCD. At 3000kbps, it starts to stutter. From 2600-2700 kbps, playback is smooth and it is usually how high I would go under normal circumstances. All tests were done with 480x480 or 352x480 resolutions and with VBR as encoded with CCE, because I have found no reason to go beyond that.

There were some freaky incidents where SVCD with bitrate over 3000kbps plays very smoothly on DV-C503. I am still investigating it and trying to find all the clues. But usually I won't go over 3000kbps. 2700kbps gives me excellent results.

  3. Thanks for reply!

that's what I thought. So this site does report it incorectly.

I have no reason to go beyond 2500 vbr as well, but I do include max threshold of ~3300 so theoretically I'd presume there might be some places where bitrate goes much higher than average for an extended amount of time long enough to case the stutter. That's why I was asking specificly about CBR tests..

In fact, I have a test cd that contains several CBR tracks graded from standard SVCD to 5000 in 100 - 200 kbps increments. So I can measure max bitrate pretty close.

Or maybe player doesn't have to meet max bitrate so precisely as I think? ..

    Thanks!
