I have a strange problem with encoding PAL DVDs to VCD
I use Smartripper/DVD2avi/TmpegEnc to encode using the Pal(VideoCD) template and the problem is itermittant jerkiness at various places in the movie.

To date, Ive only been able to solve the problem by unlock.mcf the
templete and using VBR max1160 average1150 min1150 which the resultin
vcd plays fine & smooth in Orion,Omni,XMS,Rowa,PS1(with vcd adaptor)and Teac players.

Problem is....Ulead DVD MovieFactory and Workshop will not accept them
as compliant mpeg streams.(Workshop attempts to re-encode, but the
jerkiness returns and the time taken to re-encode is slow)

Ive used various encoders with the results listed below:

XingEncoder..VCD is perfectly smooth & compliant...Quality is Crap Though.

CCE Cinema Craft Encoder..VCD is perfectly smooth & Quality is good.
BUT...even though i specify CBR it creates a VBR which isnt compliant.

PanasonicMPEG Encoder..VCD is smooth & compliant but quality is average
    and encoding time is SLOOOOOOOW

TmpegEnc (all versions)..VCD quality is the best and compliant but jerky
when ripped from PAL dvds. (ive had no problems with NTSC dvds)

Finally a very strange thing i experimented with was to Force NTSC
playback on my standalone OmniDVD player and the video was SMOOTH!
Ive tried Vstrip,DVDpatcher but without success

Can anyone shed some light on why PAL dvds are such a pain ?

    Thanks
    Phil

What setting do you use in DVD2AVI for Video>Field operation?
