Unable to play AVI files

I've downloaded some AVI files that wont play using Real One, or any other player i try

says that problem with filter,....

what does this mean, and how can it be corrected ?

Can the video be loaded into VDub?

cant be loaded in vdub

says,

couldnt locate decompressor for format 'dx50'
" vdub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec, to decompress video
direct show codecs not suitable"

for your info, movie concerned is the eminem movie - 8 Mile

Go to the Tools section at left, look up Nimo Codec, and download and install from the link.
