How many lines of resolution does the average cable channel allow? Or, what is the standard for lines of resolution for cable channels (if there is a standard)?
Also if I were to record from TV onto my digital camera, would I be able to capture about 99% of the cable channel quality if I recorded in SP? SP=1hour digital, what if I recorded LP=2hour digital?....what would be the quality of each related to the original and related a normal VHS recording?

Cable channels vary, digital cameras vary, VCR's vary. Digital should be better than VCR, 1-hr better than 2. How much better will vary with equipment, and is a subjective value impossible to quantify.
720x480 is standard NTSC resolution. -
Well the thing is tonight for example, I want to record a Basketball game on ESPN2.
Is it better to record into my digital camera at SP on two tapes rather than record SP on VHS cassette with an average VCR?
How close is my SP recording into a Digital Camera from TV to the original quality of the TV cable channel itself? Anyone know? -
I thought I answered this. NO ONE can tell you the answer, it will depend on your particular equipment. Do both and LOOK.
As a general rule, the Digital camera SHOULD look better, as I already stated. But maybe you have a Kick-Ass VCR and a POS camera, with bad cable connectors and a worn-out drive motor. Two tapes versus one adds a convenience issue in addition to pure quality concerns.
As far as how close, How high is UP? -
The camera is Sony TRV-320 Digital Camera. I would record onto a 8mm tape in the DIGITAL 8 form.
Why is it that the Digital Form would be better theoretically? Isn't it technically analog?
My VCR is very old so I am willing to bet any new equipment would be better. But I was wondering theorically what do these type of cameras in DIGITAL 8 form record at in terms of resolution from TV to camera?
Sorry for all these questions, I am kind of confused myself...... -
nickos,
as was stated, ALWAYS record in SP mode if you are planning on reliving
the experience to the fullest, hence the CDR goal of yours.
400 lines, 500 lines. I guess, in your case, it really doesn't matter, as
you seem to be a beginer at this. Will take you almost forever to become
fluent, but never the less, just record in SP mode - Always!
Then, you have the option of either:
* utilizing firewire to TRANSfer (not capture) to your harddrive, or
* Analog capture it to your harddrive via an analog capture card
Then there's the issue with "getting the best quality" out of your source.
This questoin is asked umpteenth times. So, do searches and read, read
read!
You are recording SPORTS. This is the area quality is hit the most in.
Too many fast movements, and little squares (objects like peoples heads
or hands waving or whatever) to encode.
Also, your source is cable. By nature, this source is noisey. An issue I
have, and hate fearsly at the moment.
Also, you have to take into consideration of the quality of the source ie,
their may already be macro blocks in the source (if not live) I get this
even in my Satalite captures. ...blocks in them, cause they are already
their from the station that re-encoded them for broadcase.
Also, you have to consider the Interlace in live broadcase.
Well, that's about enought for me here.
