Looking for programme to remove loud pops and sound spikes from mpgs.

On some mpgs I have there apparently is some bad data which causes there to be a picture glitch and a loud scratch or popping noise whenever the bad section is played. I use SmartPar and WinRAR to assemble many mpgs from Rar files I acquire and 99% of the sound/picture is fine. I have TMPG which has been helpful somewhat but very time consuming to edit out each pop.

I am hoping there is a programme I can use to process my mpgs which will automatically MUTE any sound above a particular default I set up. If the normal sound is between 3-5 on the VU metre and the pops are at 10+, I can set it to mute anything above say a 6. I hope this is making sense to someone out there and others have found a solution. Thank you for helping.

    Phil

  3. If there is a picture glitch as well, why not just extract the video and audio (if you know the frames numbers of bad frames)with Virtualdub and save as new stream.

I could do that but it would be very time consuming.

I would have to edit them one at a time.

    Thank you though.

Thanks for the tip! Sounds as if it'll do the job alright. I wonder if there are any others perhaps a bit less $$ or with less bells & whistles.

Wow! Now here's a neat lil proggie.

    Nice graphics and reasonable price.

I will try the demo and see if it can remedy my worries.

Has anyone any personal experience with this Goldweave you care to share?

I appreciate all the helpful replies I am reading so soon after my initial post.

Thank you all for your ongoing support.

Well, I tried the Goldweave and it is rocket science to figure out. I tried just about all the options and tabs it had and still could not get it to work.

I've used Goldwave for audio recording and editing. (Haven't tried it with audio extracted from video, but as long as you don't change the file length it shouldn't be a problem.)

It DOES require a little experimentation. It has a lot of options, and they aren't automatic. For instance, the pop/click filter can make the sound muddy if overused. Don't expect a sow's ear to become anything better than an attractive sow's ear purse.

It also takes up considerable disk space. To enable the "undo" feature you are keeping essentially two copies of the sound file: your modified version and the "undo" version. And it's only one level of undo, so you have to take things step by step. You must "initialize" a section of disk space every time you load a file. Like video editing, it helps if your hard drive is defragmented before you start.

One thing that threw me (and which may have thrown the guy who couldn't get it to work) is that Goldwave has its own recording level knobs! You get them by clicking the "control panel" box and clicking on the check box. You can only check one audio source at a time, but the "line out" one apparently takes whatever is set on your sound card's Windows mixer. These are only used if you're taking analog sound in and recording your own WAV files. (It converts to a lot of audio formats, although you may have to find a freeware MP3 audio codec like the Blade, or buy one like the Fruenhoffer.)

Hope this helps. (The program is really worth paying for. I use it to convert audio tapes and radio broadcasts to MP3's.)
