  1. Does anyone know if Ulead's DVD Workshop can import VCD MPEG1 files without re-encoding them? We'd like to use it to import externally created VCD MPEG1 files, create a menu for these files, and burn a VCD.

    Thanks,

Yes it can. The way i do it is if you encode your mpg at 1150 bitrate with 224 audio then when you go to the make disk option and put the same bitrates in and it shouldn't encode it.

Make sure that when you go to make disc and it lets you choose your quality you select custom.

All you have to do is the the patch version 1.2, it has an option that asks you if you want DVD Workshop to encode the video or not. The patch is located on the Uleads website for registered owners.

  9. From the Ulead website:

Q4: When creating titles using the Make Disc command, why does Ulead DVD Workshop always re-encode my MPEG files?

A4: DVD Workshop will re-encode the MPEG file when the specified encoding bit rate in Make Disc is lower than the encoding bit rate used by the original file. If you want to retain the original encoding scheme of your file, you must specify a higher encoding bit rate than your original encoding bit rate in Make Disc.

    Hope it helps.

Thanks, that sheds some light on it and sounds like what I want to do. But if anyone's actually tried it using TMPEG, ProCoder, or similar, just post a note as it would be nice to double-check that it works as exptected.

    Thanks!

  12. Regarding DVD Workshop insisting on a re-encode of the Mpeg's here's a little info from my informal testing.
When working with Mpeg-2 files in a DVD project I've had no problems bumping up the encoding bitrate high enough to get Workshop to bypass the re-encoding process.
When working with Mpeg-1 files in a VCD project I can't find an option to set the bitrate and the re-encode is hit or miss. Some go through just fine with no re-encoding, others don't. Even some with VERY low bitrates are being encoded by Workshop before it will burn them.
I haven't messed with Svcd's yet but I'll post if I find anything.

  13. Thanks for checking it out! I'll see if Ulead tech support ever gets back to me on it as well.

    Thanks,

  14. After playing around with Workshop some more I think I've finally gotten a handle on it's re-encoding scheme.

VCD: If I'm working with a truly compliant VCD it doesn't re-encode. In the past few days I've had a few VCD's that Workshop insisted on re-encoding but after examining the files they were either corrupt or non-compliant; Vdub wouldn't open them, and Movie Factory claimed they weren't VCD files. I had to burn them with Nero without any menu structure.
I guess it's understandable that Workshop would want to re-encode them during the make disk step. What's surprising is that Workshop could work with them at all.

SVCD: If you choose a the highest bitrate during the make disk step it won't re-encode.

DVD: Same as SVCD. Choose a bitrate higher than your file is encoded at and it won't re-encode.

If all else fails, check this link:
    http://forum.vcdhelp.com/userguides/98743.php
It explains how to extract the menu file created by workshop and re-use it in another program.

  15. Many thanks for taking the time to track it down and for the tutorial tip on using DVDWS menus in other programs-- didn't know that one was up.

    Thanks,

  16. You've probably sort this out now but i had the same problem, As long as your movie is MPEG2 Compliant. you should install the Extra content file around 50Mb and for some reason this stops DWS re-encoding your movie. just select any bitrate to make disk and it doesn't matter (as long as it is DVD compliant).
