You need to make sure the AVI is safe to be split, first scan it for junk frames using Vdub. If there are none found it is safe to split.

    Vdub

    Video > direct stream copy
    Audio > direct stream copy

    Select Edit > beginning
    Mark that as start >

Move to the end of the movie with the slide bar to get the number of frames, then move to the center (frames/2) but click the yellow keyframe back once before you mark this as the end

    SAVE AVI

This saves out the first half

Now go to the middle again and click the yellow keyframe back once and mark this as start, then move to the end of the movie and mark this as end

    SAVE AVI

This saves out the second half

They wont be exactly the same size, but you wont need that anyway

That error sounds as if the file is already in use, or is read only or something ?. Do you have all the codec's installed ? The Nimo codec pack should be installed to fix most loading problems.
