  1. hi i am very new to this and i was wondering if i can ask a few questions.

    1. when burning a XVCD, do i choose the vcd template? what is the best resolution and bitrate for xvcd's?

    2. when burning, do u guys always simulate the process? or do u just burn rite away?

3.i cant play SVCD, so i use the VCD headers trick. the problem is, that tmpeg 75% of the time, cuts the files short. it gets to about 80 then stops and gives me an error. are their anyother user friendly programs that would allow me to do this VCD header trick? or is there a reason why this happens?

4.does the brand of cd-r matter? sometimes they have good deals like 100 80min cd's for 10 dollars, but im not sure if cheap cd-r's will work.

    5. when i cant use the SVCD with 'VCD' headers trick, i have to make the mpeg2 back to mpeg1. when i do this, how much quality is lost? since im new to this, i really cant tell the difference, but u experienced ppl know, so pls let me know also.

    6. when encoding a PAL to NTSC, all i do is choose the ntsc template in tmpeg? is that it?

thanks for takin the time to help me.

yes...go into the tools section and download some of the fine templates ther..eg:Sefy or Kwag

    I don't...but then again I've done over 200 burns

Why use "the trick"....just make VCD's!!....TMPGE is about as good as it gets.......the error could be several things (I don't get too many myself but I always suggest extracting the audio with Virtualdub to use as the audio source)

I have tried every imaginable type of media and to be honest (on my DVD ) I don't see that much difference (they all burn and play ok for me).I have reasearched it a bit and dicovered that there are only 5 or 6 major manufacturers of media and they then sell them to a second party who put their own name on it before distribution.

If you can only play VCD on your DVD ...just make a Mpeg 1 in the first place.

I just leave it as is...because my cheapie DVD plays everything I throw at it.thanks for takin the time to help me.

As wee haggis said - you can't go to far wrong using Sefy or Kwag's template.
On the other hand you could just download and TRY some of them.
Run a small 10-20 sec clip and judge for yourself

  5. Yep, Kwag's and Sefy's are both good template sets. A nice feature of tmpgenc is that you can encode as short of a clip as you like; no need to do the whole project for a test. Your eye and ears are a better judge of encoding quality than entire libraries full of opinions.

  6. And don't forget to read the text files that come with the Templates, to make sure it was tested on your DVD Player type!
