  1. I am interested in authoring my own VCD (or DVD) and I'm not really happy with the authoring software that is available.

I am interested in creating my own menu/navigation system and then using something like nero or ezcdc to do the actual writing.

So, I need to know where the data is stored on the disc image. Like where are the .mpegs, where are the background images, where is the link text, etc ...

Any reference anyone could provide would be great (and sorry if this has already been posted).

    Thanks!

The very best program is Sonic Scenarist.

It however, costs like 10 thousand dollars.

    Now their's always the internet...

But anyway, it allows you to creat menu's and utilize all aspects of the DVD Format.

It outputs either an image to the hard drive or to DBL TAPE drive for duplication

  4. For VCD info try the VCDimager.org site. I think it is open source.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

  5. VCDImager is definitely open source and free.

If you want to have maximum flexibility in your authoring of S/VCDs, it is the way to go:
    http://www.vcdimager.org
    http://www.vcdimager.org/guides

VCDEasy is a reasonable GUI to VCDImager for the beginner.

VCDImager outputs CUE/BIN images of VCDs which you can burn with CDRDAO/VCDEasy, CDRWin or the newer versions of Nero.

  6. Thanks for the info guys ... and I'll look into the links right away.

BUT ... I was more interested in the file structure. Meaning, in order to display a menu background, the player has to know to look in a specific place to load the image. The same goes for menu text, rollover information, etc ... I was more interested in where all this goes so I can do it by hand (or write a simple app to do it for me).

But, again thanks ... I'll check all the given resources.

The others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you ever need (or be able) to "do it by hand". The authoring program you choose to use should build the directory structure for you.

  8. For authoring menus for VCDs, etc., I again strongly urge anyone to invest some time to learn how to use VCDImager.

As for the "directory structure", this isn't something you need to worry about for VCDs. It is not something you can create by hand and is handled by the authoring software.
