I have a video I recorded from VHS to MPEG-1 with about 35 seconds excess on fron I'm tryin to trim off with TMPEGenc version 2.56 and 2.57. For some reason though, after I do the cut the audio and video are fine near the beginning, but later in the video get anywhere from 1/4 - 1/2 second out of sync. The original MPEG doesn't have this problem so it's happening somewhere during the cut. Any advice?

Unfortunately when capturing it is possible to have dropped frames, these don’t show up during playback, but can cause problems later if trying to edit them.
You could try clicking the button that says "correct"
You could also try using the Merge & Cut, but not selecting the source range, and simply making another stream copy, if the second copy is ok, then you may be able to correct that.
You could also cut the good part then work on the second part using the audio gap -/+ -
I'm willing to bet this is the problem. I cut it using Ulead Video Studio 6 and teh same thing happened. Is there something I can do to help prevent dropped frames when capturing to MPEG? Looks like I'll probably have to learn how to push record and play at teh same time unless I can get the number of dropped frames under control.

You need to see what your card can do, lowering the size of your capture will help, as will lowering other settings. Making sure your hard drive is defragged, not running other programs in the background, all help.
This is one of the reasons people capture to AVI instead, because they are easier to edit later. You still need to use programs like Vdub to check the capture later, but now its much easier to edit. If the AVI can be re-made without errors, you can move on to TMPGEnc for conversion.
There are many people criticizing TMPGEnc for causing audio sync or blaming it for all sorts of problems, when in reality its the source that's the problem. -
I had it set to record regular VCD and all programs and background operations turned off except what I needed. I tried recording the same video today, but starting the recording closer to where I actually wanted the video to begin, so there was no need for editing and it worked fine. I just did a full format and reinstall of Windows about 3 weeks ago, so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to defrag the HD, but I doubt it's in terrible shape.
As for Virtual Dub, It's not recognizing my capture device. I'm a novice at the program though, so I could easily have something set wrong. And aren't AVI captures very large? I have about 13 gigs free on one drive and about 8 or so on the other, so if I start capturing huge AVI files my space will get eaten pretty quickly. -
3 weeks ago ?, god... in this game you need to defrag every day
No wonder you have problems
If your AVI's are too large, try selecting a codec instead of uncompressed saves.
Anyway, it is better to capture to VCD mepg if you can get it to work correctly, any of these glitches can cause sync, editing problems later
