  1. Hi,

I wanted to add some splash screens to the start and end of some videos I downloaded, but after re-encoding, I found that the end file is not as 'crisp' and not the same quality as the original... would it be the software I'm using, or maybe its the hardware I have?

I'm using Ulead Media Studio 6 to add the splash screens and then it re-encodes the whole file.

Also, I'm re-encoding at the same resolution and bitrate.

One more point, I have a video file that is 90MB, but after re-encoding at the same resolution and bitrate its around 45MB instead, but the quality is a little worse. And this is the same when I take an 45MB file and re-encode it, its still 45MB but as I said, quality is not up there with the original.... What software should I be using, and what is a good PAL resolution and bitrate? Its all Mpeg-1 BTW.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. MPEG is a lossy format. Every time you re-encode an MPEG file, it will get slightly worse.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

Ok... so do you have any suggestions as to how I can add splash screens without loss of quality?

    Thanks.

Instead of re-encoding the entire clip, just add the start and end splash screen clips as separate files - for example, if you use VCDEasy, you can specify the delay between segments; just set it zero.

Will there be 3 files then? Also, can you do transition effects with VCDEasy?

    Thanks.

  6. Also, if you have the option to use your file to set the specs of your project, ("Set specs same as a file I specify", at which point you specify your main file), then (if it's anything like VideoStudio) it won't re-encode the entire file, just the frames that are affected by the transitions and titles. The other frames will just be re-muxed, but not re-encoded.

  7. My previous post referred to Ulead Media Studio (which I failed to specify).

For some reason I can't seem to find that option anywhere. Are you talking about Media Studio Pro 6.0?
