Sorry if this sounds stupid but is it possible to burn .AVI file direct to CD-R and if affirmative,which burning software can I use.Thanks for any input.

Yes if your just want to store the AVI as a data file, then yes its just a regular data disk just like any other.
You would only select a VCD if you were going to make a VCD for your DVD player, then you would need to convert the AVI to Mpeg 1 before you did anything ele -
