Exactly what are you doing, converting an AVI ? try scanning the AVI for junk frames in Vdub first.

Other than that, you need to give a LOT more info

  3. I`m getting similar errors.. Used to be fine, but when I leave it to encode, it usually gets to 99 percent, says error but its still converted the AVI to Mpeg. Watched a film I;d done the other night and the last 5 mins it was awful, blotchy and going wrong. So how do you do that thing with VDub. I`ve got the utility. Do you load it up and then what?

Ah yes, the 99% error, well that's not necessary a junk AVI, sometimes TMPGEnc will do that just to wake you up when its finished. Usually caused by more video than audio at the end of the AVI or at delta frames, you can perhaps cut the AVI at a keyframe at the end to fix that problem. However since it usually stops after the 99% the output Mpeg is usually OK.

If it continues to encode after its reached the end, just hit STOP, then load the .mpg into TMPGEnc merge/cut and use the source range up until the last frame.

To answer your question on scanning for junk frames, The latest version of Vdub has a problem sometimes, so don't get upset if it crashes on the scan, if it does you need to use old faithful

    Vdub
Video > Scan video stream for errors

When its finished, it may list the number of junk frames at the bottom. To remove them you only need to save out another copy of the AVI as movie2.AVI

    Video > Direct stream copy
    Audio > direct stream copy
    SAVE AVI

Junk frames will not be saved...

    Old Faithful
    Download "vdub-mp3-freeze.exe" (Kazaa)

Video > Check video for Freezes
This program makes a log of the junk frames at c:\badframes.log You can use that log to "Goto" start and end of the listed numbers. These may be in blocks, so start with the highest block numbers first.

    e.g

    12345 2nd block
    12346
    12347
    12348
    333555 1st block
    333556
    333557

    Goto 333555
Click the yellow icon (keyframes) back once
    Mark as start
    Goto 333557
Click the yellow icon (keyframes) forward once
    Mark as end

    Press the delete key

Now do the next lower block, don't start at the lower once first, or you will need to re-scan

    Video > Direct stream copy
    Audio > direct stream copy
    SAVE AVI

  7. vdub = virtualdub
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
