  1. I have a Sony ns315 standalone, Pioneer 104 burner
    Questions for all:
    1. Where have you purchased from
    2. I don't want to spend more than $2.5 per disc
    3. Will places accept returns if the media does not work

The best media (in terms of compatibility on various machines) aren't the cheapest media. Stick with media certified to burn @ 2x, i.e., Apple, Verbatim, Pioneer. Even though they're more expensive (US$4.99) you will not be disappointed in performance or compatibility.

  3. Appreciate the reply, my concern is I'm backing up and other I'm splitting dvd9s to dvd5 x 2 so I'm trying to keep the cost down or it would make more since to just buy the movies. My home movies I'll stick to the more expensive stuff. So I just wanted to here some of the peoples experiences with different generic brands and retailers.

I'm renting DVDs off the net and copying them, yeah. I admit it. Using Apple DVD-R, copying an overly long movie requires two DVD-Rs so thats $10 for the DVDs. Renting costs, on average $2.50 per movie (I rent in bulk). Your average movie costs $20. I'm saving $7.50 per movie by copying. Re-encoding and cramming two movies onto one DVD-R is costing me $9.99 per blank DVD. Re-encoding is saving me $15 per movie by copying.

As for porn, the savings are even moreso.

So Antny is actually making about $2/hour for his labor. Guess I won't quit my job at Burger King.

BTW, Meritline has DVD-R's for just over $3 that claim to be 2X certified.

Copying a DVD is not labor intensive if you know what you're doing. Ripping is done during dinner. Re-encoding is done overnight while sleeping. Burning is done while I write responses here. There is no perceived loss of time. Combined with the fact I'm collecting more films that I would ever purchase (and, as such, Hollywood is getting their share of my rental fee), I'm doing Hollywood a favor by renting so many of their movies that I would otherwise never attempt to see.

  7. Guys, Guys I was hoping for people to post a link to a cheap order house with what they consider a good experience with the retailer and their product. Also if someone knows of a place to stay away from I would like to know of that place too. http://store.yahoo.com/cd-recordable-dot-com/info.html I've been looking at this place, $2.00 apiece for 30pk also they have a return policy if the media doesn't work.

    Now my 2 cents

AntnyMD, i think I've got you beat $1 movie rentals (Mon & Wed local grocery), I split my dvd's so $2cd x 2 + $1rental = $5.00 a movie. FYI if hollywood really wants to eliminate copying, lower prices to $5 a movie and this forum and all those dvd rip guides would't excist. Most movies already made their money back at the theatres, so quit putting all that other crap on the cd and sell it a good price. Another note I refuse to buy a dvd if I already bought the VHS tape. Anyways back to the topic...post me some links!

  8. My personal favorite is the 2.00 Optodisc bought through SuperMediaStore -
    http://store.yahoo.com/supermediastore/op47dvgenpur.html

I've had bad luck with the media from www.cd-dvd-supplies.com - they break up badly even on my Pioneer 333 which is supposed to play anything (and I'm not just talking about the cheaper disks - their 1.49 disks won't even write in my LF-D311 - I get a power calibration error - their $3-$4 disks are the ones that break up).

Getting 3 movies is not even a challenge - just use TMPGEnc, CQ 70-80 and 352 x 480 (576 for PAL) - the average 100 minute movie comes out at less than 1 MB.

Primedisc. $1.80-$2.20 per, depending on the quantity you buy. The local chain of shops, PC Club, and also its older brother Fry's Electronics, here in the Phoenix area, have had a special running on Primedisc lately where you get 10 discs for $20, or 50 discs for $89.99.

    esbuy is nice and cheap.

cdrecordable.com is also cheap but when they changed suppliers the quality went down. I returned my last batch... I think it was bad. if they send the stuff they used to have, I'll be quite pleased.

There are more media out there that are even more generic, and they don't cost much, but quality could be a question mark.

  18. No blocks is NOT the same as DVD quality, Baker - you can't lower the bitrate and have the "same" quality. It might look the same to you, but it's not the same.

    Personally, at CQ-75 and above, I can't tell the difference between a 352 x 480 and 720 x 480 unless I'm watching on a very large TV screen.

    I bought 4.7G DVD-R 25 pack for $33.75 or equal to $1.35 each from http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/. I recently got information about 9.4G DVD-R for $2.5 for 50 or $5.95 for each at http://www.cdrecordable.com/
Bulk ordering is cheaper than indivual buying. If you join the DVD club like columbia house you might get DVD movies cheaper price anyway. I guess its depend on individual's hobby.

  27. The best prices I've experienced so far is from

    www.qtccdr.com

Excellent service and price is a no brainer at $1.60 for 2X and $1.10 for 1X. I suggest you call their number as the prices posted on their website is usually higher, I live close in their area so I always pick it up.

And for double sided 9.4 GB DVD-R try

    www.rima.com

    I hope this helps

  29. I have tryed alot of diff. media TDK. apple,& pioneer are prob. the best.
have had some luck with some cheap media to thoe digital media works great & burns at 2x i bought a sample pack from merit line for $20 for 10-discs the LAC-DVDR worked great even burned at 2x
The ML-DVDSILVERS suck they get pixily after about 2.5GB
The OptodiscDVDR termenated after about 2gb so Iwont buy them again
The meritline discs that are packaged like the pioneers work good but only burn at 1x
They also sent me 2 discs that were certified at 2x these work well also
In closing there is alot of media out there try a couple and see what works for you. Some media I think is player specific i have 4 DVD-players and always try them ouy on all 4 if all 4 wont play then I lable as bad media ie:ML_DVDSILVER .....

    Happy Burning GARGOYL.....

  30. Try VIVASTAR DVD-Rs from TigerDirect.com 30ps for $49.99
They burn at 1x only on my pioneer dvr-104 at tigerdirect it is 2x.
They play fine on my sony s300 and sampo 631cf, but it takes longer time for sony to recognize the medea, than Apple dvd-rs(14 sec/4 sec).
    Regards.
    Alex.
