  1. Also if someone knows of a place to stay away from I would like to know of that place too. http://store.yahoo.com/cd-recordable-dot-com/info.html I've been looking at this place, $2.00 apiece for 30pk also they have a return policy if the media doesn't work.
cdrecordable.com is also cheap but when they changed suppliers the quality went down. I returned my last batch... I think it was bad. if they send the stuff they used to have, I'll be quite pleased.
I would NOT order from cdrecordable. I bought 60 DVD-Rs (made by Eastman Kodak) and none would work in my Panasonic DMR E20 or my Pioneer 104. Supposedly they have a satisfaction guarantee, but just try to get it! They make promises on the phone ("We'll replace them for you." "We'll credit your account.") but so far, nothing. They are ignoring numerous e-mails I have sent. It has been over a month now and I still am stuck with 60 bad discs.

  2. I have the same Pioneer burner (A04) and have had the same issues. The first batch from cdrecordable worked ok; the second batch either isn't recognized by the player or it skips. Each call to them (4 total) resulted in "yeah, I'm putting the replacement order on the truck right now". Needless to say, it's been almost a month and nothing has arrived.

Have also tried Universal, TDK, and Memorex. TDK is the only brand thus far that has performed but I can't find them for less than $3.61 each.

Until I tried TDK, I really thought I had a problem with my burner and was ready to send it back.

I've read all kinds of posts about guys using $1 media and am looking forward to the day I can depend on it!

    Thanks,

    SJ

  4. Have you tried this media in a number of different stand alone players? That has been my problem; cheaper media tends to work in fewer players and so far, TDK seems to be the only one that works in my Samp, Aiwa, Sony (Playstation 2), Proscan, and RCA portable players. BTW, the RCA portable seems to play everything I throw at it.

    Thanks,

    sj

  6. Here's my experience to add to the pile.

I'm using a Pioneer A04 burner. I bought the silver esbuy disks (around $3.25 each) and it appears they have sucked. After burning, you can see small swirls in the media, which I assume are flaws. The disks play (I use an Apex 5131) but will freeze/resume/freeze/resume at various points, mostly towards the end of the video.

I purchased a Memorex disk retail and the same movie that was flawed on the esbuy disks played perfectly. I have ordered some Verbatim disks to see how they work. Looks to me like name brands make a difference here.

    Pioneer A04 burner.

    I use $1.09 media.

I burn at least 3-5 movies PER night right now.

    www.supermediastore.com

    I suggest either the Ritek's ($1.25 per 90+) or DvdPro's ($1.09 per 90+).

These play in PS2, Apex 500W, Apex 1200, Panasonic A110 (old DVD player), and four other DVD players my friends have (which I can't remember model names off top of my head).

I personally think it's the way people perform the process that is the problem (ie. using VBR instead of CBR !!)

    cheers,

    kyle

  8. Hi Kyle,

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look into it.

I know for me the problems are not how I process the video. I burned the exact same encode on 3 different disks. Two (the esbuy disks) had the problem in different/varying spots in the video, the Memorex didn't have a problem anywhere. Plus, on the esbuy disks I had, you could SEE the flaws on the disk. Kinda makes it obvious that this was the problem on this disk. BTW, I do use VBR too.

  11. Has anyone tried the white top princo 2x that seem to be available now?

I know the 1x princo are supposed to be worthless, but these would have to be approved by pioneer to write 2x, correct?

A guy on eBay is selling what he calls 2X TDK DVD-R media at $1.85 a piece (but in 100 count spindles). I asked him how did he know that he was selling TDK disks, and received this reply:
    Hi,
They are TDK brand, but there is no label on the DVD-Rs. We know they are TDK because we test them with our DVD manufacture identifier software.

    Sincerely,
    Kelly
    Vinpower.net

I'm assuming that he is using "ADVDInfo.EXE" as his test utility.

    Here is his URL:

    http://www.stores.ebay.com/id=36611019

or, search eBay with "DVD-R MEDIA TDK". Has anyone tried these blanks yet?

  13. I just called TDK regarding the same ebay auctions. They transferred me to a technician who told me that TDK currently does NOT sell 100 packs of media in any form. I have seen other people post saying unbranded TDK disks are crap, and as a result i do not believe these to be TDK. The TDK guy said he thinks another manufacturer is probably using the TDK code in the DVD identifier as an indirect attempt to make money.

The guy on ebay is probably selling junk with a TDK identifier, or the TDK rep was lying to me to cover up some of the crap they sold off. Either way, the stuff on ebay sounds like a bad idea.

Anyway, be wary of any unbranded "TDK" media, according to TDK, they do not sell in bulk any quantity larger than 10 DVD-Rs, with those branded.

  14. As far as I know the princo 2x ARE NOT certified by pioneer. They are certified by princo, lol

As mentioned b4, the major DVD disc manufacturers will sell to OEM's at lower prices if they are willing to accept product that has been through less testing than the name branded discs.

  18. The brand name DVD-R are still just under $5 a piece, like Verbatim, Pioneer, Sony, TDK, Panasonic, Maxel and so on.
However, the last batches of non-branded disks seems to be getting up to spec. I have tried the trial 10 pack from Meritline, and all disks have worked fine. It looks like the white or silver tops 2X certified DVD-R's are basically the same quality as the 2X name brand type, but for less than $3. Also, the cheap 1X silver tops at just over $1 seems to work fine. I have an "old" Apex 660 which is really picky about the medium.

    skittelsen,

How many players have you tested these discs on? Success in 4 or 5 players does not to me, reliably guarantee compatability.

I have 4 different players myself. Sometimes I burn a disc that plays perfectly on all of them. then I bring it to my moms and it won't play on hers (which is the exact same model as one of my four!)!
