  1. I've been trying to use VirtualDub to record some of my old videos from my VCR onto my computer into .avi format.

The poblem is, I can't seem to get any sound from it. When I switch the program into Capture Mode and press play on my VCR, it displays the picture perfectly, and it even plays the sound at this stage too. The problem arises when I tell it to start recording however, at which point all sound cuts out, and it only records the video.

The TV card I'm using is an external Hauppage WinTV-USB card, and my soundcard is a Soundblaster Live. As you can tell, I'm very new to this video recording scene, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you told Vdub which input to use for the sound, which should be the same as the input your using "line in" for example. it may be switching inputs...

Old Versions of Vdub required you to go into capture and back out, then back in to capture.

  3. I'm probably being completely dense here, but I can't seem to find a screen anywhere on VirtualDub that asks me to select what input source to use for audio capturing. I found the screen under Video>Source to select where to get that from, but I see nothing similar for the Audio.

Like I said, I'm probably being completely thick here, but as I mentioned, I am a newbie to this kind of thing, so please bear with me! :P

Um , I've not used this program to capture for a long while your right there is none Have you gone into the Video > Settings > Capture audio ? Also audio > compression to see if you need to specified the type of output.

Just tried it here, and it does capture sound on my system, I first used the cards software to set it up, then went straight into Vdub.

  5. I had no sound on VirtualDub as well - and all the other capture programs. I discovered something about Windows XP that gives me another reason to hate Bill Gates.

As you know, the "volume control" has a separate panel that has recoring controls for your audio sources. Each source has a check box that mutes that particular source. Not only is this panel more inaccessible on Windows XP, but the check boxes work in reverse - you check them to UN-mute the sources, not to mute them! When I thought I was turning the sources on, I was muting them all.

After this, I discovered I could record audio okay.

It is for this reason, if the sound is switched off, then this would switch it back on. I have also found that by using www.goldwave.com and selecting the line in, you can adjust things better, before finally capturing.

Another problem is with mono cards, if the balance control is midway you can have bad sound or none at all. swing the control left and try then right and try to see which is the best.
