  2. You need to let us know what side of the Atlantic you are.

In USA I do not think there are any PCI cards that work
    with Dishnetwork or DirectTV

In Europe they do have these cards, you need a smart card
or you only get a few free channels.
They let you rip the mpeg2 stream direct to the HD without re-encoding.

    In USA:
You can always use Video Capture card, but with a
dish you do not get TV tuner function and would digitize a
    analog (s-video) signal.

  5. No need for a VCR, you still have a "tuner" but you would have to change
the channel on the Satellite box.

The software on the PC can not do that for you.
it can with analog cable tv, if the card comes with Tuner that is.

Just use the S-video out on the Satillite box to Capture card
    and a stereo audio cable.

Look in Sundays Newspaper for deals on them, Bestbuy or Compusa.

  7. What operating system are you using. I have been doing vcds on my imac using Eye-tv which uses RCA jacks and records into quick time. Toast then converts to vcd when you record to disk. Recording is in real time and about 6 minutes to do vcd. If you are using windows I don't know what you can use to record, I do know that most record in but the files are very big and take enourmous amounts of time to convert after they are captured. You would have to record to smaller files to cut conversion time.

  9. One other option is to get a DV camcorder.
with S-video in and 1394 out.

Record to the miniDV tape and some cameras
actually have Analog to 1394 passthrough.

Probably will cost you around $400 but if you are in the
market for a Video Camera, why not.

  10. hi i use my avi tv wonder ve to cap from dtv all the time with software provided with card. i cap to mpeg format as high bitrate xvcd. if im capping a movie i dont try to put more than 50 minutes per cd that way i can get high bitrate quality capture. i have 2 32" tvs and i cant really tell the difference between an avi cap encoded to mpeg and a movie capped to mpeg high bitrate. composite from card to sat reciever use line in for sound. im happy with the results. it is at vhs quality atleast. i mean come on if you want dvd quality buy the dvd. :P i use nero to burn turn off compliance. and my rca drd220 plays my xvcd's back at up to 2.5 M bit/ps which is pretty good quality. peace out.
