  1. This might be a dumb ass question but here goes... I understand that +RW , +R formats are different than -RW , -R and will not play in some players... my questrion is... what format are the DVD movies burned in.... (the ones ya hire at the dvd shop) as these play in every player I know.... that is the DVD burner I want to buy....

  3. Not a dumb question at all.

The DVD discs you hire and buy are created
using glass masters (that is a mirror image of a DVD is etched into glass and then pressed onto a reflective substrate to make the end disc). This only becomes cost effective if you copy batches of a few thousand at a time.

+R -R RW use an entirely different technology to burn or simulate similar pits. However, due of the theat of piracy and differing commercial interests, the recording units available for sale to end consumers have media that is both locked against using CSS encryption (stopping direct DVD to DVD copies) and are not 100% compatable with DVD players in
general (as no one wants to support a standard unless they are forced to.)

  4. So basically you are saying that if I bought a DVD burner today and hired a DVD movie and ripped it and cracked the code I could not burn it onto a DVD blank ?? (not that I would do that kind of stuff)... if I could do it would the quality (video and DD5.1 sound) be as good as the original ?

  5. No you can rip a DVD movie no problem.. just takes time. The result, depending on your method (movie size etc) can be exactly the same
    quality as the orig. DVD.

I was talking about direct DVD to DVD copying, which you can't do. You have to rip.

  7. Well I just made a dirrect copy from dvd to dvd+r and it played in all my dvd players, that is deawoo and pioneer without any problems just as the original with all the extras, the movie was under 4 gb. Some of the movies are not protected like most of the sports dvds, the movies I copied dvd to dvd were ski movies and mountain bike movies and it worked without any problem.

Sorry but I don't give out contact info anymore, nothing against you - just
a principle I employ after past problems. You should find all you need
here (see guide links on left hand side) or at doom9

    @ shagrath

    Be cautious about spreading misinformation.
DVD-R contains content protection measures that make it
physically impossible to make bit for bit copies of CSS encrypted
DVD's. None of the titles you copied were protected were they?

  9. Offline, well the dvds I have copied where not protected, I wouldnt be able to make that copy in the first place but I did and it works perfect. and it is not DVD-R the copies where made to a DVD+R by a philips dvdrw228. Those are not some major movies as all the popular titles, these are mostly sport related movies which I think they just dont care about adding any protectiont to it, here are some of the titles if anyone is interesting that I made a sucessful DVD To DVD copies with nero 5.5.9.0: Ski Movie 1 and 2, New World Disorder 1 and 2, There is something about McKonkey, Propaganda etc, those are some of the titles you can find them in the sports section at amazon.com .
