I have downloaded an old VHS video tape to my computer and it is in .mpg format.

What formats can I use on my DVD player to view this on my TV.

I have converted to DVD but the result (AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS) display a rather great loss of picture quality.

This is my first try at doing this so I still have my "L" plates on.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Garbage in garbage out. How good was the VHS tape to begin with? If the tape does not have Macrovision on it, it could be a poor quality tape. I send my tapes through my JVC DR-M10S recorder and it improves the quality of the output. I also have a stabilizer to remove Macrovision when called for.

    From what with what ?
How much did you put on 1 dvdr ?

The VHS tape was made in 1990 using a National VHS camera.

I transfered it to my Dell laptop using Ulead VideoStudio SE DVD and all looks great on screen.

Then converted to DVD format using a freeware program called Freemake Video Converter.

When I played the DVD on my Panasonic Digital Recorder/Player the loss of picture quality was very evident.

This VHS tape holds some old family memories.

Freemake Video Converter ? Never heard of it, but it sounds like the type of crap that people often spam us with.

If you already have the DVD edition of video studio, why not use it to encode and author the disc ?

Otherwise have a look at the free AVStoDVD, which uses a high quality encoder (HCEnc) and does a pretty good job.

Most likely it's because your initial capture size or resolution was too small(nowhere near 720x576). All video looks "great" when it is the size of a postage stamp(compared to full size).
