  1. I have been trying forever to get a good capture that is all ready
to go for DVD authoring. I don't want to resample, re-encode or
    anything... It's driving me crazy!

Right now I have an All-in-Wonder 128 Pro and it does everything
pretty well, except for the audio is sampled at 44.1 kHz instead of
the required 48 by DVD. I demux and resample with Tmpgenc
and it does okay, but with long files the a/v sync gets a little off.

I'm willing to buy a whole new capture card if I'm convinced that
it will do the job. Does anybody know of one? I'm suspecting the
AIW 8500DV is capable of it but I think the software might not be.
    Any suggestions? Please!

  2. I have the same problem with a Leadtek TV 2000 XP setup and a Sound Blaster Live Platinum - can't get 48 kHz only 44.1 kHz. Currently send the mpeg through WinProducer which will convert to 48 kHz - as well as allowing me to chop the video sampling rate down so that it will fit on a DVD. However 2 hr of mpeg takes about 6-7 hours to do the conversion.

Wish I knew of a decent direct capture of 48 kHz - anyone out there that has solved the problem without reencoding!!

    Regards - alewis

  3. For the AIW, you should be able to upgrade to MMC 7.7.

  4. MMC 7.7 can capture at 48khz.

  5. I just got a Dazzle DVCII. Takes S-video, composite, and audio in. Creates an MPEG2 or MPEG1 file REALTIME. Comes with a breakout box, connector cable, PCI card, software and cables. Captures 48Khz. Has settings for different audio rates and video rates. Basic color correction.

I used to capture thru my camcorder s-video to 1394 to .avi on hdd then encode with tmpgenc. Took FOREVER.

I am VERY satisfied with Dazzle as far as s-video source caps. $299 at Best buy.

  6. Dgsmith,

Is the quality better or equal with the DVCII?

Secondly, what software did you use to capture when using the MiniDV pass through?

As well as the Dazzle dgsmith mentioned above, you may like to consider the following cards

    Real Magic DVR - http://www.teamsolutions.co.uk/
    Hauppage WinTV PVR - http://www.hauppauge.com/
    Pinnacle Systems MP20 - http://www.pinnaclesys.com/

  8. Have a Happauge PVR card for $199 and no problem capturing at the following,

    704x480
5000 bitrate (can go to 12,000 if need be)

    constant or variable
will capture up to 720x576 if need be

  9. yg1968,

I would say the quality of DVCII directly to MPEG2 vs. dv -> avi -> mpeg2 is about 95%. You will pretty much always get better results post processing avi files than a direct mpeg2 capture unless you shell out the big $$$ for a high end card. So, 95% as good and realtime? A no-brainer for me. Satellite caps look just like you are watching satellite, can't really tell the difference (friends can't, i can because i know. always your own worst critic etc). The DVCII actually has great color, even thru the 30' svideo cable i use to get it from tv to pc.

When I capped with dv passthru, I started out using MGI videowave, but it sucked. I messed with a few others, but when doing dv all you really want is to capture the avi. I mean really, you are going go post process anyway, so you want just avi cap, no extra crap in the program to slow stuff down. I ended up using scenealyzer, it is a great down and dirty app, no frills, works flawlessly.

Dropped into tmpgenc, great results. Takes a long, long time.
