I have just been to visit the DVD de-mistified link and found that PS2 employ some kind of dual-read laser in their drive which reads, through auto-switching, both CD and DVD.
So given this, why don't they play SVCDs which use MPEG2 like DVD?
Or can they?

Alas, nope. PS2 is crippled, and mine, like every other, is completely incapable of playing VCD and SVCD. As I understand it, PS2 barely even plays DVD, the way it's been designed.
Ironically Xbox is considered an outstanding DVD player... plays all media types, you can even hack it to play divx files now. Too bad it's not that good for playing video games!!!-MPB/AZ
