  1. How can you distinguish files when downloaded. Does Divx have the same file extension as AVI if so how do you tell them apart? Mpg/mpeg downloads, how can you tell if its vcd or svcd. Last question, with the SVCD pluggin for Nero, when you make a video disc from an avi file how do you know whats being encoded VCD or SVCD???

These questions are very basic, if you need to ask them you have a huge amount to learn, However you have come to the right place, this site has all the information you need, just take a look at the guides.

AVI's come in many forms, most are DivX that you download, clicking your right hand mouse on them and selection properties will show what codec was used to make the AVI. AVI's have the extension AVI

Mpeg Mpg are Mpeg files, they might have been set up with the correct parameters for a fully compliant VCD in NTSC or PAL, any program you use to burn can identifier them, as can most of the utilities used to convert.

Don't use Nero to make any disks with a AVI, its no good. Use TMPGENC to convert the AVI to a VCD mpeg.
