  1. I have been ripping X-Files episodes from DVD using Smrtrupper, DVD2AVI, TMPGenc and Nero. I lower the bitrate to about 2200 so that it'll fit on one 80 min cd. The problem is that when I get done and try to burn it Nero tells me that the file is way too large to burn.

I used the calculator on this site to compute the bitrate that I encoded it at. Is there a problem with the calculator? Is there anything anyone can think of that would make the files larger than they are supposed to be? Please help!

First off look at your file and verify that it really is the correct size. As long as its about 790-795MB's then it should fit on an 80 min cdr.

There is a bug with some versions of nero where it basically ignores you filesize and just looks at playtime, which can be incorrect if vbr encoding was used. I think this only applies to vcds though, and at 2200kbits, I can't see this being a problem either. Anyways, I can tell you from experience that the bitrate calculator on this site is extremely accurate. I have always come with 5MB's or so of my target size when I used it.

2 things, the BR calculatur is really pointless unless your doing 2-pass encoding.

Also try a program like VCDEasy or VCDImager and burn w/ cdrwin. Nero IMO isnt a very good program when doing video.

  6. I was using 2-pass VBR when I started this project but I've switched to CBR in trying to troubleshoot this problem. I have upped to Nero 5.5.8.2 but it didn't make any difference. The file sizes are all less than 795MB, some quite a bit less. One episode is at 751MB.

While I was writing this I have been trying some other things. It looks like Nero is calculating based on actual size of the file, not on the length of the video. Why the heck would it be doing that?? I am burning it as an SVCD, not as an ISO.

  7. try making an image file, then burning to cd as an image. it should correct itself now. also try overburning, i can get about 725M on an 80 min cd by oveburning & making an image. sometimes it says the burn was unsuccesful, but still works without any errors.
