I use dscaler for watching, but when I try capping with it the video is distorted, like the image is squished.

I've never been able to get those drivers to install in 98se.
They end up with a non-working board requiring a complete reinstall.
Delete all inf's pertaining to the cap card, remove all devices from device manager, reinstall everything, including DirectX, with a couple reboots thrown in.

I wish the %$#*!'ing cap card database was online!

  4. All the WinTV PCI cards comes with 720x480 drivers. But, you need to use vdub or similar program to actually capture this high. As always, you have to turn off Overlay video preview.

I went through the same thing a few days ago that you are going through now. I recently got the Avermedia AverTV Stereo and was also limited to the 320x240 capture res. However I did get the btwincap drivers to work and now I can cap at whatever res I want.

Here's the kluge method of how I got the drivers to work. The btwincap drivers wouldn't detect my card (or any card) until I did this.

I installed the Avermedia win2K drivers from their website, rebooted and then uninstalled them (deleted the tv-hardware from within device manager) and then rebooted. Windows tried to install the hardware but I said no for every thing that popped up. Then I went to install the btwin drivers and it said that the card was a Avermedia TV98 or something like that (BT878 which is what the AverTV stereo has.) I installed the drivers and rebooted. Then tried Vdub and now I can capture at high res.

I don't think the audio works but I capture from my sound card anyway.

It ain't a pretty installation procedure but it worked. It may also work if you just pick Avermedia TV98 right off the bat without installing/uninstalling.

I'd heard before that they work in win2k.

I really don't want to upgrade to 2k just for a TV card.

How are all these people doing high res divx caps?

Are there cards dedicated to AVI capture like there are mpeg 1/2 hardware cap cards?

I once vowed never to upgrade to another windows operating system after win98se but I was very surprised with the stability of win2K. The system is more stable and with the NTFS I no longer have the 4GB file limit (as with fat32.) I can still use all the programs that I had been using too. I would suggest that you upgrade to win2k especially if you plan on capping files at high res.

The people doing high res caps are more than likely using a different capture card.
