5:4 Aspect ratio when capturing

I have captured serval VHS tapes and noticed of 5:4 display aspect ratio 720x576 PAL.

Why am I getting 5:4 on mediainfo?
On VLC's media info I do not see the aspect ratio.

How do I know if my capture file is ok?

MediaInfo just reports it as 720/576 = 1.25 = 5/4.

For playing the file you have to force the player to play it as 4:3

For encoding you should either
- specify the DAR (Display Asect Ratio) as 4:3 or specify the SAR(Sampling Aspect Ratio) as 12:11
- or resize it to square pixels

Your capture does not have an aspect ratio flag yet, Mediainfo judges the aspect ratio based on the resolution and assuming pixels are square, In reality digital SD video from analog sources does not have square pixel architecture, Pixels are rectangular.

Absolutely normal. 720*576 is the standard resolution for a PAL capture. Since your capture file does not have a DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) flag, mediainfo simply applies width*height which equals 5*4.

I guess you will eventually convert your file to a more manageable size with a codec that has a DAR. Or simply force it to 4:3 in a player such as VLC

On Vdub it says "Unknown ratio (Source)"
So you all say it's normal?

It's about 50-70 tapes, so I don't really want to edit each again if the capture was 1:1 to the tape.

Yes, it is normal. Unknown because the capture file is not flagged.

It has to be stretched to 4:3 upon playback. Now you see a slightly squashed picture.

It's a VHS capture so the DAR is very most likely 4:3

That is correct, if you take the full frame;
Letterboxed videos on VHS (cropped) have a different DAR
